N 1 ROBERT TOLER FRED STINSON WALTER PIERCE Z 5 'A B 2 F3 2 h 5 ,, E s IQ 2 Q 3 E SUPERlNTENDENT'S MESSAGE LONG time ago Emerson Wrote, The test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of cities, nor crops, but the kind of man a country turns out. The wisdom of these words is now being definitely and practically realized. In this age of specialization it is not a difficult matter for business men to find a pure technician for any line of work. There is however, a vast difference in the amount of integrity pos- sessed by individuals. Integrity is a simple sounding term until it is analyzed into its mul- T titude of elements such as honesty, fairness, i cooperation and reliability, in other words, all those qualities which combined produce good character. Social values outrank economic values. Economic gains, even scientific gains, are worse than useless, if they accrue to a people unfitted by trained character to use, and not abuse them. It has been the aim of the faculty to teach you more than technical skill and factual knowledge. They have attempted to instill in you standards of con- duct and moral principles which, if taken seriously, cannot help but result in a more useful and satisfactory citizenship. -Lizwrs E. DUNCAN. PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE i ORICSICHT means seeing tomorrow's needs today. Planning means using foresight so that we shall be ready to meet future situ- ations when they arrive. Lack of foresight is one of the frailties of youth. Many students find it difficult to realize the importance of the present school life in relation to their fu- ture. The road to success must be found early in life. If it is not discovered until late in life, we can make little use of the road. Highly successful men of today are simply cashing in on the virtuous habits formed in their youth, habits of clean living and think- ing, promptness, neatness, dependability, and the desire to do and be something. You may count this school year as hav- ing been worth while if it has helped you form your life along these lines. --LAURENCE DEACON. Page Five FACULTY LEWIS E. We entered as freshmen four short years ago with thirty students. Now nineteen of the original number remain. Some members have dropped out and their places have been filled by transfer and special students. Lawrence Powell hailed from Onalaska, Bernice Adkins from California, Earl Reynolds from Randle, Wanda Hummel from Centralia, and Ralph Selfe from way back yonder in West Virginny. Our class has been well represented in various types of school activitites. To boys' basketball our class contributed Ted Perkins, Glen Schwartz, Don Adams, and Bill McDaniel. In girls' basketball we were represented by Mona Miller, Lanora Collins, Helen Hanger, Wanda Hummel, Bernice Adkins, and Mary Hensley. These girls won the interclass basketballlchampionship for three years. In other activities our class was well represented. In football, for instance, Law- son Snodgrass with his Tarzan strength and his unique words of inspiration did much to bring victory to Mossyrock. Tom Severns gave all he had to the game, fighting for his Alma Mater. Adams, with his speed and wily tactics and shifti- ness was responsible for the majority of Mossyr0ck's touchdowns. Others out- standing in football were: Degross, Brooks, Hagen, Gossan and Smetzler. For the junior play last year the class selected and presented Behind the News. As seniors the class presented The Gentleman From Hong Kongf' a three-act mystery comedy. Since entering high school our class has been striving to win the class day award for the best program presented on class day. Although we failed in our freshman and sophomore years, we were not discouraged and were rewarded for our efforts during our junior year. From the senior class we graduate to the class of alumni. No doubt we will always hold dear the memory of four pleasant and happy years spent in Mossy- rock High School. Page Nine '-Q80-M, SENIORS . . GEORGE BROOKS . . . Our May Queen is next, Mona's the lass. Then comes Wanda, president of the class. Doc is the boy who just can't behave, Clarence is the boy with the permanent wave. Who's next? Oh yes. Bernice, our young June bride. Too bad, fellows, she's already been spied! That Snodgrass boy can sure play ball, And where Powell came from, they grow ,em tall. Now we have Norie, our basketball champ, Frank, all the girls have been trying to vamp. Next is Bill who is on the staff. Here comes the two Toms, prepare for a laugh! Chuck has been hit by cupid's dart. Now we have Pierce, better know as Art. Helen is the girl with the laughing eyes. Perkins, we're sure in this world will rise. Ralph is the boy with the southern drawlg Glen Brooks you know, is exceedingly small. Next is Leonard who has fiery hair. Schwartz and Reynolds are a handsome pair. Last but not least comes Mary, so clever, We're wishing now she'd stay here forever. This ends our toast to the seniors true. VVe won't say goodbye, we'll just say adieu. --lvv FULLER and BEss1E WILSON, '39. Since our freshman year we have had the reputation of being a model, stu- dious and talented group. Now We complete our junior year, which is said to be the happiest of the four high school years. The year's crowning activity was, of course, the junior play, entitled Every- body's Crazyf, given hlarch 26. The work called for the largest cast that has ever gone on the stage of the Mossyrock auditorium for a high school play. It was a huge success and things look very encouraging for the next year's senior play, considering the dramatic talent uncovered by this year's performance. As the time came around for the juniors to entertain the student body, the class worked up several skits, musical numbers and a monologue. Our class was well represented in athletics. The juniors contributed more athletes than any other one class. The number includes: Bob Steele, Clyde Strong, Grady Bratcher, Cecil Baker, Paul Reagan, Eddie Rittenhouse, Verne Perkins, Carl and Elmer Pries, and Tom Overstreet. The girls who took out- standing part in athletics were: Thelma England, Beatrice Sawyer, Lotus Thomp- son, Virginia Martin, Esther Steele and Alma Sherman. It is an annual tradition that the juniors entertain the seniors each year. This year the juniors Tised the successful method of picnic supper and theatre entertainment. Here we are thirty-three strong, ready, willing and able to take over senior duties and responsibilities. That suits us well for they say dignity comes when you are old and a senior. VVe're saving up for that time with a goodly store of knowledge and wisdom. Look at the good examples already set for us, so why not be gay while we can? The class was well represented in basketball by both boys and girls. Our boys turned out well in other sports, too, but of course every one can't make the grade. Vie try though, and are very studious but possibly not too smart. Some great singers are sure to rise from our classg some poets, some artists, too, perhaps. The rest are just good common people. Our class has to provide our own amusement anyway because we are left out, pushed around and for- gotten by othersg we do not even have the honor Cif anyj of being freshmen. At the Tilton River, a most favored spot, the honorable sophomores held their picnic amid much rejoicing and merriment under the watchful eye of a teacher or two. With our cheerful philosophy and ability to get along, we will make model juniors, the schoolis joy and hopeg and we wish we may be as happy and good scholars then as we have been this year. Vlie will be refined young ladies and courteous young gentlemen. Also we have the great ability to become famous athletes. You've seen our boys defeat the school in basketball now, so what do you think we can do when Weire Hgrown- upv? Some of the boys were good at football during that season but were still better in basketball. You remember our class did win the interclass championship for boysl The girls could at the first of the term be seen behind the wood-pile playing soccer. When this game stopped, basketball was the star game. A few freshmen girls were on the team and in later years we intend to appear clothed in red and black and make Klossyrock proud of us. The sophomore class entertained us at our initiation, September 27, 1936, which we enjoyed thoroughly until some of the boys appeared too rowdy for much pleasure. This initiation is always repaid to the sophomores, so on the night of hlarch 17, 1937, a return party was given. This was enjoyed by all who attended. Vl'e thank the upper classmen and teachers for helping us find the hlossy- rock High School a place of enjoyment, learning and understanding. This year saw the addition of thirteen banners to the Ag Club's trophy case, among these thirteen are: Graild prize in dairy judging U00 pointsj, first on Jersey heif- on Holstein, and fourth on jersey. All these from the Portland International Livestock Exposition in which seventy judging teams from the western states and the team from the Hawaiian Islands participated. INIossyrock's team won second prize from Gresham, Oregon, first prizee in sheep judging at the Southwest Washington fair and first prize in hog judging at the Western VVashington fair. The F.F.A. gave its annual Father and Sons' Banquet in the fall and it was a fine success. There were one hundred fifty persons present including the Kiwanis Club of Chehalis, which provided the entertainment for the evening, several advisers and the presidents of F.F.A. organizations of other schools. After the school term ended last year, Mr. Burt and eighteen of the boys enjoyed a trip to eastern VVashington and Idaho. They began their trip on the Columbia Highway, went through The Dalles, Ore., Walla VValla, Lewiston, Idaho, Pullman, Spokane, Grand Coulee, Wvenatchee, Leavenworth, and Came home over Stevens Pass. All of the boys reported a fine trip. An annual trip to the Washington State College at Pullman is awarded to the boys having the highest grades and best projects. Those eligible this year - are: Tom Severns, Lawson Snodgrass, Glen Schwartz and Ted Perkins. As a perfect ending for a busy year, the F.F.A. boys plan to take a trip to Yellowstone National Park. FOOTBALL BOACH GEHRKE coached the Mossyrock football squad through the most successful season that Mossyrock has seen for several years. Out oflfive games played, three were Wong all by wide margins. The first game was lost to Pe Ell, 13 to 6, on the Mossyrock field. It was a piece of bad luck for the Vikings, they just missed scoring a second time by inches. In the second game the Vikings walked over Toledo, 25 to 6, on the latter's field. Next Mossyrock played host to Adna and trounced them 47 to 6. VVinlock fell the next easy victim on her own field 40 to 6 to the Mossyrock eleven. In the last game played with Onalaska on the Mossyrock gridiron, the Viking line went in a slump and in spite of scoring first, the game was lost to Onalaska 30 to 14. Out of the first eleven, four seniors are lost: Snodgrass, Severns, G. DeGross, and Adams. Adams made a majority of Mossyrock's touchdowns and performed some excellent running plays. DeGross played in the half-back position and Snod- grass was on the line. Severns, because of a leg injury, did not play the whole .season, but did play the whole of the Onalaska game. Coach Gehrke did good work building up his team and gave the boys many new plays that were yardage gainers for Mossyrock. Next year, eight of the main string will be back and there is good material present in that group. A Weak line and some formation to take the place of Adam's running are the two ,main problems of the coach. I Page Eighteen BASKETBALL HIC Nlossyrock basketball team didn't bring home any honors this year or perform any glorious feats. but in the face of defeat it did buckle down for everything that was in the game and lost by close margins and with a smile. Out of the eight games played, two were victories. both with Randleg 36 to I2 and 33 to 19. The rest were defeats, but the opponents fought for all they got. This season's outcome was due chiefly to lack of experienced players. This year's games gave a number of boys some good practice and experience which should prove valuable next year. Both juniors and sophomores promise good material, and Coach Clehrke predicts an improved team within the next two years. Three first string men are lost as seniors. They are Perkins. Schwartz. and Adams, the latter being the Yiking's high point man for the season. The Nlossyrock second team deserves honorable mention for their playing this year. Out of the eight games played Con the league schedule of the first teaml six were victories, one tied with Onalaska and one defeat by Morton with only at one-point margin. Don Davis was high point man on the second string. ranking next in line to Adams. Yerne Perkins, Elmer Pries and Harold Hilton also played on the second string. Those four soon proved their metal and were raised to the first string squad. lt is not definite as to just who is to fill the exact positions next year. This, as a matter of form, will depend on the development of the individual player. Page Nineteen GIRLS' BASKETBALL G:lITlHlf Yiking squad, coached by Miss Redmond, was made up of a group of girls who were full of fight. Xlossyrock began its season playing eight games, winning two and losing six. Two court basketball was played this year, instead of three court. This method proved to be more successful because the girls were allowed more freedom. The following girls played on the first team. Forwards: Dora Collins, Lanora Collins, Wanda Hummel, Beatrice Sawyer, Bernice Adkins. Guards: lVIona Mil- ler. hlae Sawyer, Yirginia hlartin, Lotus Thompson, and Thelma England. Because of the large number of girls turning out, a second team was or- ganized. The girls who played on this squad Were: Evelyn Sprague, VVilma Kelly, Louzena Metzker, Carol Brannon, Frances Wright, Bessie Vlfilson, Helen Hanger, Alma Sherman, Irene Smetzler, and hflary Hensley. Interclass games were played this year. The seniors Won the championship and sophomores took second place. juniors and freshmen tied for third place. GIRLS' LEAGUE I Hli first Girls' League meeting was called to order by the adviser of the Girls' League, Miss Lindstrom. The freshmen girls and new girls were welcomed and made members of the league. The following officers were elected for the year: President, Delia Mchlurryg vice-president, Vl'ilma Kelly, secretary, Isobel Swigert. One of the projects sponsored by the league was the pie sales held on several days. These sales proved to be very profitable. Another means for raising funds was the faculty dinners held the first Monday of each month. The girls also had .several shoe-shine days. The hlothers and Daughters' Banquet held lN Iay 7 was a big success. The mothers of the boys as well as those of the girls were invited. The program con- sisted of the following numbers: Vl'elcome address, by lN'Iary Hensley, lN'Iothers, Return, by hlrs. Swigertg a song, by Lorna Brannon, Isobel Swigert and Carol Brannon, a trumpet trio, song by girls' chorus, and two skits. Ns BAND AND ORCHESTRA Dl'R band which consists of thirty members has had a very successful year under the direction of Nfr. -lensen. There are eight beginners in the class who play violins, accordions and saxophones. hlembers of the class concentrated on numbers for the Spring Concert instead of entering contests. Included in the Spring Concert were the following numbers given by members of band and orchestra: Several instrumental trios and duets, four marches, three waltzes and two characteristic pieces. One of the activities which was greatly enjoyed by all was participation in the pep band which played at the athletic functions. This group also played at several entertainments given at the high school. This year the band bought sweaters to wear while playing. These were red and black with large emblems. The group ended the year by playing for the Commencement Exercises. Next year they will probably surprise everyone by playing even better than they did this year. GLEE CLUB Giillgl-Ili Clee Clubs under the direction of Mr. Deacon have enjoyed singing together and have worked toward the presentation of several numbers which were given in public. Although the group has not performed very often as a whole, several indi- viduals have shown remarkable ability in trio, quartette, and solo numbers. Lorna Brannon, Carol Brannon and Isobel Swigert were much in demand for trio numbers for programs. Bob Kerns and Norman Kellison were two very well liked soloists. The Spring Concert was the most important public performance of the year. At this concert the group sang: ulndian Dawn, Green Cathedraln and 'SPale in the Amber West. During the year the group also practiced singing: Friend O' Kline, f'Ciribiribin,v and Shortnin' Bread. The year was closed with the group singing Friend O' Minev at the Com- mencement Exercises. L eonard Thompson 66 HE Gentleman From Hong Kongf' a thrilling mystery play, was pre- sented by the Mossyrock senior class on December 18. The moonlight scenes were very effective, and the interior was one of the best yet. X In the first act many mysterious persons come and go. June Montgomery has a secret formula in her home. Many come to help her find the formula, Boyd Garner, the actor included. Others came for the sole purpose of finding the formula for themselves. Lights on and off! Mysterious and weird noises! Silent figures gliding softly in and out! Gun fire breaking the silence of the night! Everyone suspects everybody else. All have ac-ted suspiciously, even the stuttring and comical maid, Sophia Shedd. Ke Yung always keeps his eyes open and has the reputation of a cautious thinker. In the last act the crooks are discovered by Ke Yung, who turns out to be a detective story writer. He is assisted by Benita Byron of the Secret Service. The unsuspected gypsy girl, the Russian spy, Ricardo Revell and the supposed sheriff, Tompkins, were the crooks. All of this was topped off with the spice and gaiety of the newspaper reporter, Elin joy. Captain Henderson takes the captured ones away and the final curtain falls on a successful mystery comedy. UTSTANDING among the junior class activities of the past year was the presentation of the play, Everybody's Crazy, March 26. It was a rollicking humorous play all the way through. It was so weird in some parts it almost made cold chills run up and down one's back and so hu- morous the audience was held from the moment the action started until the final curtain, and was swept along from one hysterically funny incident to another. The plot centers around the purchase of a hotel by three college boys. Their desire was to make a pile of spondulex and splurge their last year at college. After they were there awhile they found there was a blood-curdling spook running around. Thy nearly lost all their customers and were in an awful mess. But they finally found the ghost and for their efforts a mere three thousand dollar treasure. The three college boys got their Wish, the girls they loved, and Tommy Wilkins got a brand new pair of breeches. Page Twenty-three SCENES AROUND SCHOOL E s 5 Y E 2 F rf: 2 5 .2 5? F? 3 E . 5? INDUSTRIAL ARTS 'l'l'lDl'iX'l'S taking shop are very fortunate in having the modern building and equipment they have this year. At the beginning of the year, the shop stu- dents. under the instruction of hlr. Nelson. began fixing up the new quarters. Cupboard space for students equipment was made and additional shop tables were constructed to accommodate the in- creasing number of students taking the course. Une special innovation was the stool raclt where stools used by drawing classes can be put out ol the way when drawing classes are not in session. Drawing boards have been made to lit in the vises. In this way the boards can be held securely while the pupils are at work. The new lathe purchased this year has proved very useful. Another addition to equipment is a bench where tools can be sharpened and lumber is stored underneath. All in all. the new shop is a decided im- provement over the cramped quarters of former years. Students have the advantage of more storage space, working room, bet- .ter opportunity for systematic arrangement and use of materials.
