During the past year the band re- ceived a 10th place rating in a field of 85 com- peting bands in the State Fair Contest. In September the band played a concert for Leg- ion Day and led the visiting Bands. Drum Corps and Drill Teams to the Athletic Field where the Legion competitions were held. In October, the Marching Band went to Southport to participate in the State March- ing Contest and was awarded a Ist Division rating. Losing thir- teen letter men through graduation last spring, the team was expected to lack in ex- perience. But under the excellent guidance of Coach Stepancevich and Assistant Coach Brewer, the team worked long and hard. The season ended with four games won and three lost. The season started off slowly with a loss to Kirklin by a score of 26-0. Our next game was our first night game under the new field lights. The Tigers came out on top of a hard fought game with Alexandria, 13-6. The Homecoming football game saw the Tigermen come through with a 20-19 victory over Brookville. The next home game under the lights saw the Tigers losing a heartbreaker to Cam- bridge City, 7-0. On October 7, the squad lost a grueling game to Batesville by the score of 19-0. The remaining two garnes were won easily, over Jackson Central by the score of 25-0 and Charlton by 25-6. The following senior boys played strong and hard to help give the team the winning spirit which it had. ROBERT CRAFT, F. B.--The team has lost an all around football player in Bob. He was always counted upon to play any position on the team. THOMAS JORDAN, L. G.-A fine leader. and captain of the team who was full of the desire to Win, and a great competitor. AR'l'HL'H SICAVER, L. T.-Art operated at left tackle and did a very commendable job. He was always in the thick of battle and had the "never say die" attitude. t'llARLI'1S MOORE. K. H.-Charles helped pull the Tigers out ot' some tight monents this year. and surprised everyone with his running skill. EDWARD SMITH. R. G.-Hd had his ups and downs, but always kept trying his hard- est to help the Tigers win. ICLGICNIC lIARTHOLIt', tlgliugene broke in as our new center this past year. and he did much to increse our defense and offensive power. VHARLES GLAZE, R. G.-Charles seldom missed a practice session, and was very helpful to the team whether he played, or sat on the bench. The underclassmen who deserve much recognition for the past football season were: James Hart, George Wheeler, Robert Rupp. Ernie Minton, Joe Mcllermitt, Clarence Draper, and Frank Strother. Freshmen Football IIE I-'RESHMEN football squad had a fairly good season this year. Mr. Brewer was coach for the second season. The squad played three games and ended their season with a record of two wins against one defeat. The team opened its season under the new athletic field lights. They got off to a rousing start by beating Vambridge City by a score of 20 to 0. The second game was also played at home. New Castle went down to defeat by a score of 13 to 0. The third game saw the team travel to Greenfield to face its only defeat. The final score being 7 to 6, Greenfield. Kneeling: Larry Harshman. HE MURTON Memorial Tigers started preparations for the 1955-56 basketball season late in October when Coach Brewer issued the first call for practice. Graduation last spring took four of the first five, leaving a large gap to be filled. Twenty-five boys reported for practice, and with many hours of training in fundamentals and scrimmag- ing, the boys started the season at Mays. November 11. During the course of the year. the Tigers won ten games while dropping nine. Although there was only one senior on the varsity, which was Fharles Moore, the team progressed fairly well. Most of the starting five had had some experience of varsity ball. This was a year of rebuilding for the Morton five. Charles Moore was the spark of the team and brought the Tigers out of some tight spots during the year. He was an aggressive man and a good shot when it was needed. Underclassmen on the squad were James Hart, George Wheeler, Bob Rupp, Ernie Minton, James Draper, and Reginald Stone. Others who saw action were: Melvin Whitesell, Joe McDermitt, Frank Strother, and Vlifford McDermitt. Scoring for the year was very evenly divided with James Hart leading the Tigers in scoring with 307 points. He was followed by George Wheeler who scored 272. Ernie Minton 2-16, Melvin Whitesell 165, Bob Rupp, 1132, Charles Moore 40, Joe McDermitt 7. and James Draper 5. Second Team HE SEFOND Team, better known as the Morton Kits, compiled a season record of five wins and twelve loses. The Kits played the preliminaries to the varsity games. and they gained valuable experience which will be of a benefit to them in years to come. Many of the games were very close and were as fiercely fought as the varsity games.
