The- Potters also, with the help of Captain Steve Doane, pounded to a 4-3 Heart of Illinois tally. Selected for the All-Conference team this year were Steve Doane, Kevin Mc- Greevey, Steve Park, joe Zobrist, Rick King, Hans Schuon, and Don Osterman. Poor weather often held down the scoring in games this year, but more often than not the Potters came out on top, outscoring seven of ten opponents, yet coming up even at the end ofthe year 148-148 in total points. Coach Mussarelli had assistance from Coach McDonald, newly-acquired Coach Feeley, and from Coach Schupp. There will be 16 returning letterman on the 1974. The loss of Mortonis first, second, and fourth runners meant a lot of hard work. Coach Smith pushed his harrier squad as best he could, but his efforts were often offset by untimely injuries or sudden illness. Often, with ajV runner filling in a varsity spot, Morton took on its tough opponents. This years schedule was shaved down to 11 races from the previous year's 14 Qdualsj to al- low for more rest and practices between meets. This year's record was 1-9-1 with the lone win coming against Olympia and a rare tie coming against Normal Community. The absence of Doug Shull this season was a terrific blow to the squad as they had counted on his leadership for the 1973 sea- son. The fastest time of any Morton runner was produced by Glenn Stieglitz with a clocking of 17:O0.9 minutes over the very dif- ficult 3.0 plus course. The course record, however, belongs to Dana Hiserote of Peoria Central with a 16:07. The high point man on the team was Mike VanDeVeer with 32175 points. Due to an unfortunate diving accident last summer at Heritage Lake, this year he gets around in a wheelchair. After many weeks in Peoria medical facilities, he and his mother moved to Englewood, Colorado, so that Doug could go to Craig Rehabilitation Center. In Colorado he met many of the Denver Broncos football team, and went through an intense program to help him recover. Doug returned to Morton on February 20, 1974. He appeared much healthier and was in fact much stronger. His first day back in school was February 28, to take a look around. He was enrolled in Novels for the first semester and thanks to the kindness of his many friends, was warmly welcomed back. GIRL'S EXTRAMURAL fin A gg?
