These men have introduced new ideas, and if the year 1949 is any indication, the future can be nothing short of a success. Another feather in our caps was the State Championship title which was bestowed on our victorious football team. Of course, with Mr. Flynn coaching, and co-captains in the persons of "Ace" Simmons and Mike Barry, we can readily understand the team's skein of victories. We learned this year not to send an "S.O.S." when in difficulty, but to send for an "S.S.O." Yes, these people comprising our service club did a hne job in the halls, and helped the SSO members that were on the athletic teams to keep limbered up Seriously this organization proved to be another stepping stone toward more perfect school unity Be bop may be a term applied to music but in our case it was used to describe our popular and rather unusual choice of Senior Hat Style angle and tassels characterized these chic chapeaux and we wore them with much pride and the usual degree of egotism lor four years vvc offered alibis to our teachers now at last we had a perfect one' Under the expert direction of Mr P B Cowan the 49ers presented The Perfect Alibi by A A Milne which proved to be a smashing success One day in February 1949 we saw many strange faces appear and wondered what their purpose was and whom they belonged to In short Wha hop pined' When we went to our scheduled classes we found a treat in store for us as a huge Debating Tournament was scheduled The topic discussed was Resolved that a World Gov ernment be established now This topic was intelligently discussed by de baters from many New ersey high schools and aroused so much interest among our student body that a World Federalists club was formed advocating the proposal Track came into the center of attraction when an interclass track meet was held The great skill and ease with which erry Sullivan and Les Wallack ran -1-T , made it easy to understand why our class was the victorious one. This is the sort of thing our school needs!! Many thanks go to the teachers who made our days at MHS the enjoyable ones they were. It seems that as our high school days come to a close, we become more and more aware of all the good they have done us. The presentation of the "Student Prince" was one of the most popular productions of 1949. The sing- ing and acting was supervised by Charles Meys, and beautiful scenery added to its success. In looking back over our senior year, we can't forget our famous baseball team, with such an out- standing player as Bob Ketch Neither can we forget our school band and the fine concert they gave Our last year also marked the formation of nevv clubs the HiY World Federalists and the High Hatters a band led by Charlie Traetto playing the sweetest music this side of Morristown As seniors we shall always remember the cver popular Senior Stairs front seats in assembly thc gang at Thode s and the swapping of senior pic tures We owe much thanks to Dolores Del ilippis for the time and effort she spent making Cobbonian picture schedules and making our appointments at Parker s In mentioning sports we shouldnt forget girls participation Flo Rynearson showed her skill on the basketball court Babe Rhodes with her bow and arrow fno not Cupidj made a great archery record Irene Martin was one of our stars shining especially on the baseball diamond College Boards have been taken and job place ments made and now we are ready to tackle the big world in fulfillment of our many ambitions But a senior year isnt complete without a Prom Ours we know will be one of beauty and elegance which we will remember forever The girls in their colorful gowns with their handsome escorts will make it a perfect ending to our many happy days at MHS It will be with much reluctance that we leave these hallowed halls our pioneering days in our Alma Mater -4. The highlight of the undefeated season, the memorable 37-6 defeat of Phillipsburg, brought to Morristown the honor of being the first New jersey team to stop the P-burgers on the gridiron in the past eight years. The season was terminated successfully on Thanksgiving Day by our tenth consecutive defeat of Dover. The strength of the team lay in its magnificent blocking, seldom done so capably by a high school team, which aided the reputations developed and deserved by jim Vance and Ozzie "Ace" Simmons, the "Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside" of New jersey football. IL!! Page 70 - - .. Q A , Other sterling performances were turned in by Al Ciampaglia, Bob Ketch, lfrcd Davis, Mike Gallagher, johnny Havas, Pete Grandy and Morristown's outstanding block- ing tackle, Shelton Bryant. Missed also will be Tom Voorhees, Bob Callahan, and jerry Sullivan who contributed much to the success of the past season. In handing out literary orchids, the etiicient job turned in by Bob Bentz, student manager, should not be forgotten. Descrving are Mr. Flynn's assistant coaches, "Cap" Smith, Ditlow Schroll, and "Mike" LaBove. Tennis, track, basketball, archery and softball have featured the 1948-19-19 year. Intramural competition in each sport was climaxed with interscholastic contests. MHS girls proved fairly successful throughout. In track, revived after a lapse of some years, MHS won the county meet, taking 7 of the 8 first placesg then lost an inter- sectional meet with the girls of Edison Institute, Havana, Cuba. Basketball brought games with Millburn, Mountain Lakes, Dover and Alfred Vail, our class teams winning 5 of the 9 games. In tennis a team of seven was chosen from a beginners' class and an elimination tournament uncovered potential players. Three matches were scheduled: Drew University was defeated 3-2, and Caldwell High 4-1. The archery team dis- tinguished itself by finishing second in the Panzer College handicap shoot, and was also entered in the National Mail Tournament and in an all-day tournament for high school girls, held in Hackensack. The GAC itself, parent to the sports clubs, held a number of meetings and carried on several projects. The closing event of the season was the annual luncheon, high- lighted by the presentation of numerals, letters, charms and trophies earned throughout the year and also by announcement of the officers elected to serve for 1949-1950. .Plz 'L 1 ii, 41- it Ii f v:.,..-:-':- i 4-frf ,W- V' Il ' ' 'ff :gli 'sax qi , by 4,1 .1-xx wa X qx Wx 1 I' WZ W7 r f s X W4 my gk I X?
