Middle row-Dottie Ahlburg, Hal Brown, Jim Cobb, Carl Rydingsword Bill Hayward Phyllis Balllett Back row-Karen Kelley, Pat Ganulin, June Major, Marlyn Talley, Anna Menelaus, Ruth Pettijohn, Lee Eggers Betty Devendorf, Missing: Chris Cottle, Burton Davies. 6PAeAians Eight of Morningside's most honored seniors were carefully selected by the Faculty and Senior Class for acceptance into the exclusive Ephebian Society, modern counterpart of the highly regarded and ofhcially recognized Ephebians of ancient Athens. As was the case in Athens then, they are the hope and pride of MHS and Inglewood now. The 1958 Ephebians were finally chosen by faculty members after the entire senior class voted on the 24 students whom they thought had best fulfilled the necessary qualifications, which included scholastic accomplishments and school service. Selected for membership were Chris Cottle, Dorothy Ahlburg, Burt Davies, Hedy Kay Davis, Phyllis Balliett, Jim Cobb, Betty Lusby and Dale Anderson. They were initiated into this society at graduation upon the recital of the following oath, a translation of the one used in ancient Athens: We will never bring disgrace to this our city by any act of dishonesty or cowardice, nor ever desert our suffering comrades in the ranksg we will fight for the ideals and sacred things of the city, both alone and with many, we will revere and obey the city's laws and do our best to incite a like respect in those above us who are prone to annul or set them naughty we will strive unceasingly to quicken the public sense of civic duty. Thus, in all these ways, we will transmit this city not only not less, but far greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us. Morningside is privileged in having the only Ephebian Society in the County of Los Angeles. The first ofticial announcement of this year's Ephebians came at the annual Scholarship Awards Banquet.

Scholarships This year the scholarships were not as easy to come by as they have been in the past years-not that they have ever been a cinch -due to the fact that more and more students are trying for them. More and more they are finding that scholarships are not as easy to come by as they thought they would be. MHS students held their own this year, though. The Monarch Majestics were well- qualified to meet such goals, just as the knights of old were able to meet the goals they had set before themselves. Listed below are the scholarships that were awarded to MHS Seniors. This is not a com- plete list. but due to the date of SCEPTRE printing these were all that could be printed.
