Standing: Couch Smith, Couch Cipplello Couch Branigan. and Captains oofgall Morningside's varsity football team, under new head coach Howard Johnson, had its most successful season in the schoolis history in 1958. Its only loss was against the Hawthorne Cougars. The Monarchs finished second to Hawthorne in the Pioneer League with a 4-1 league record and had an 8-1 record for the whole season. Morningside placed seven players on the first string all-Pioneer League team, including three on the offensive team and six, a league record, on the defensive team. Two made both offense and defense. The players on the offensive team were John Pettersen, left end, Chris Cot- tle, left tackle, and Glen Kezer, fullback. The players on the defensive team were Buddy Erdman, right end, Tom Cook, middle guard, Chris Cottle, left linebacker, Glen Kezer, right linebacker, Fred Davis, left halfback, and Larry Balliett, right safety. MHS players on the second string all-league offensive team were Gary Lof- gren, tackle, Neal Engdall, guard, Maurice Guthrie, center, Larry Balliett, quarter- back, and George Hansford, halfback. The players on the defensive team were Gary Lofgren, tackle, and Ken Del Conte, linebacker. Cottle, Morningside's star tackle, was chosen on the first string all-CIF team. He was the first football player in Morningside's history to receive any kind of all-CIF mention and will play in the Shrine north-south all-star game this summer.
