MODERN DANCE TROUPE The Modern Dance Troupe under the direction of Miss Betty Aronson since March l, has completed its fifth year of existence here. The troupe was organized in l939, when Mrs. june Thorn joined the faculty, and since, its works and programs, such as the Christmas and May Festivals, have added much to the school's activities. 'lhe Christmas program was not presented by the group this year, but April found them working hard at noons and after school on the program for the May Festival. They originated their own dance steps and patterns which were set to music taken from the Nut Cracker Suite , and presented their fifth annual festival on May l2. Marjorie Tower was the regular accompanist for the group this year.

GIRL SPORTS The girls' physical education classes were under Miss Betty Aronson's instruction after Mrs. June Thorn's resignation in March. Six major activities - speedball, ball room dancing, volleyball, bad- minton, ping-pong, and softball - completed the year's schedule. Speeclball, a combination of football and basketball, was played on the Athletic Field last fall. ln ball room dancing instructions was given in waltz, fox-trot, tango, and jitterbug. Following the personality course, the girls took up basketball. There was no tournament but the girls had several teams which played after school. Volleyball. ping-pong, and badminton were introduced for the first time in two years. The last activity of the year was softball and when the weather permitted the girls ran the track. My

A. X CHEERLEADERS Cheerleaders have always added much to school spirit and this year's - Mary Fletcher, Dick jacquet, Ann Murphy, and Rob Stultz - were no ex- ceptions. During football season for a mascot they made a horse, School Spirit , out of burlap sacks. As it was not stuffed, Dick and Bob filled it and kept the crowd amused at their dancing and prancing to the bands music during the halves. The group, sponsored by Mrs. .lune Thorn, held the annual dance on the night of the homecoming game. The receipts from the dance were used to buy needed equipment. B fx u Fiftyamm
