BASKETBALL The I943-44 basketball team had an exceptionally good season with I 7 wins and 3 losses. The Clydemen won their first two games and lost their third. After winning 5 straight games they lost to a strong Wheeling quintet and beat Triadelphia on a week-end trip to the Panhandle. They lost their next con- test to a hot Mannington team and were undefeated the rest of. the season. The Red and Blue Cagers came through the season with I I wins and I loss in the Big-Ten Competition to be rated as Big Ten Champions of I944. The Clydemen, after beating Clay-Battelle, lost a close one to Grafton 37-4I to lose the chance of playingin the State Tournament. Frankie Lemine, diminutive forward on the squad who sparked the team through many tough battles was placed on the All Big Ten conference team and was chosen as captain of hte second All-State team. TRACK The track team drew approximately fifty candidates this year, including six lettermen from last year, Keith Arnett, Charles Rice, and Victor Bonifili in the sprints, 'Sweden Koehler in the hurdles, Frank Lemine in the jumps, and Zeke Sine in the mile. Other boys playing outstanding roles in the Morgantown track combination this spring were Bob Romine, hurdles and high jumpg Dave Hall, shot put and discus throwg Regis Rehanek, Elvin Mollohan, Gordon Royer, and john Law in the mile relay. The track team defeated East Fairmont 63-Sl in a dual meet for their first victory. ln the next meet they captured the Big Ten Championship title by scoring 82 points to defeat Washington lrving with 77,72 points and East Fairmont with 7IjQ points. This was the first time they have had the title since I940 when they also tied Huntington's Pony Express for the State Track and Field Championship. Other important meets in which the Red and Blue participated were the Sectional and the State Meets. rllu-.w
