FOOTBALL Coach Arthur H. Clyde ended his twenty- second year as head coach and athletic director of football, basketball, and track at Morgan- town High in a blaze of glory. This year his teams marked up their best Big Ten Confer- ence record in almost a decade by winning the loop's basketball and track championships and finishing near the top in the football race. Baldy , as he is affectionately called by his youthful proteges, received his education at Geneva College, West Virginia University, and the Universities of Michigan and Illinois. He coached at Cameron and Mclieesport High Schools in Pennsylvania before coming to Morgantown. Mr. john Roberts, assistant coach, has been a member of the faculty for ten years. He was graduated from Morgantown High School with the class of l930. He entered West Virginia University in that year where he was on the baseball and wrestling teams. He was graduated from VJ. V. U, in the spring of I934 and started teaching in this school in September of that year. jack was wrestling coach during I937-38 after which it was discontinued. K N NO DEPARTMENT in the school is there more school spirit shown than in the Athletic Department. There were good hturnoutsu at all of the basket- ball and football games. And while we are on the subject of good tum- outs , the student body had a very good reason for going to the games. The football, track, and especially the basketball teams under the leadership of Coach Arthur H. Clyde and Assistant Coach John Roberts, made a very good showing during the l943-44 season. The basketball team won the Big Ten Conference Championship. The football squad finished second in the Big Ten race behind the co-winners Weston and Washington lrving. The Red and Blue track and Held boys won the Big Ten Conference Championship in a night meet at Pony Lewis Field. Even if the basketball, football, and track teams hadn't defeated most of their competition there still would have been a lot of school spirit shown. lf the teams are good or had the student body sticks with them.
