There is a sense of TogeTherness here ThaT is missing in SwiTzerland and The relTionship beTween sTudenTs and Teachers is friendlier and more helpful. STudenTs in SwiTzerland aTTend school six days a week, buT go only half a day on Wednesday and SaTurday. Sabine compared The ThirTeen subjecf requiremenTs per year To our college requiremenfs. Success ls Karen Lynne Roland was voted 1980-81 president of the National Honor Society. To be chosen, a member must be in the top 596 of the junior class and in the top 1096 of the senior class with an average grade point of ninety. Karen's duties as president are to preside over meetings, to help organize various activities, and to see that these events are properly carried out. Some activities of the society are working for the heart fund, buying Christmas trees for Senior citizens, acting as tour guides at Open House, and providing a tea for the faculty on a workday. As president Karen represents her organization well in character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Being Happy! One of Karen's principles is her definition of success. Success is doing the best with what you have, but more important it is being happy with yourself. Karen also displays her leadership and service qualities by being involved in other activities. She is a Varsity Cheerleader: President of Mu Alpha Theta, a national mathmatlcs honor organization: Homeroom president: DAR good citizenship award winner: an attendant of G-overnor's School: and part-time Medical Records Clerk at Morehead Memorial Hospital. Although Karen lives a very fulfilling life, she would not hesitate to help anyone that was in need of her assistance. Second Time Around Since the seventh grade, Valerle Roblnson has worked on an annual staff. Her interest, dedication, and dependability have earned Val the position of editor twice: once in the ninth grade and again as a senior. The first two years on the Carlllon staff were used learning the techniques, growing in knowledge, and experimenting with new ideas. l feel, Val recalls, that my experience is the main reason for my being asked to be the editor for the 1980-81 year. As editor, some of Val's P, 'ff' -gl' responsibilities include helping to organize the staff, developing the theme, planning layouts, and meeting those dreaded come-to- soon deadlines. Val spends approximatily two or three hours a day on getting the book ready for publication. I work with a very eager, and fantastic group of people. The keys to having a successful yearbook are cooperation, organization, and fun. The staff realizes these facts and is striving for one goal-the best yearbook MHS has ever had. Becoming editor of The Clarion was an accident for senior Leslle Mlzell. She was the only person to sign up for the feature staff of the newspaper in the seventh grade and was made editor. She was also editor in the ninth grade: so it seemed only natural that she became the editor of the high school newspaper her senior year. Besides doing some of the editing and writing, Leslie is responsible for all the proofreading and the layouts. lt is no accident, however, when Leslie and the staff produce a good edition. The many late, late hours spent on the newspaper make it all worthwhile. fl' An Accident Seems Natural? Everyday People X29
