CLASS HISTGRY '47 was the starting year For one hundred and three who were Gathered together as a Freshman class l-loping to stay until tour years would p Flanagan was chosen to see us through tilled with ass. And held the course both tirm and true, Until the picnic on the old ball grounds When we really telt we were out ot bounds. Roller skating and parties galore, But still we craved and asked tor more. The tinal picnic at Page's Lake Was said by all to "take the cake." Then once again in '48 So tull ot pep we could hardly wait, With l-layes as President we'd look tor tun, And preparations were then begun. For days and weeks tar in advance We worked and planned the St. Patrick Where tun and trolic held tull sway, Still echoing trom that Gym today. Tripp Lake was then the tinal tling And there we did most everything. Gathered once more in '49 With Carolyn as president we were due We needed money tor our senior class, So as the months began to pass, Talent shows and Legion ads Chisled dollars from our dads. 's dance to shine. We stretched again those tight purse strings When they dug down to buy our rings. The Junior year would be incomplete Unless the seniors got their treat: Ansco Lake was picked tor the job And won approval trom the mob. ln '50 we were bound to "click" As Carolyn again the class did pick. Several bake sales, snow-ball hop, l-lallowe'en dance and soda pop, Box social and tashion show Continuously kept us on the go. The senior play, "Come Rain or Shine," ls taking now most ot our time. We know the faculty has done its part And now is dear to every heart. With graduation drawing nigh We'll soon be leaving Montrose High. And as we go our many ways We're going to miss those good schoo l days. tear S NIORS AINEY. Then walk in two hours later, view a lovely I2xl8 picture lsubiect being anything from a vase ot tlowers to a box ot soaptlakesl, and you'll see why we think she should be. Yes, by following her hobby ot painting tor the past tive years, Nancy has proved horscli one ol our clover artists. We are proud to include her among our W'ho's Who. l Forced by a skating accident to remain at home tor over one year ot her school days, Barbara turned to one ot her many interests, soap carving, to while away some ot the tedious hours. lt was surprising what a transtormation soon came about in a 3x5 cake ot Ivory! l'ler equipment is simple--razor blades, pencil, and jack-knite --but with an eye tor design, nimble fingers, and an abundance ot patience, Bar- baras collection today includes many horses, cats, and lambs, as well as a 'family group ot deer. Her precision and skill in this and in other endeavors are an inspira- tion to her classmates. 24 While observing a Home Ec class about a year ago, Carolyn became extremely interested in figurine painting. Further inquiry into the work brought about a prompt decision to try her own hand at it. Though sho confesses her hobby is carried on a bit spasmodically, she nevertheless puts in many enjoyable hours once the paints are mixed and the equipment is in readiness. She has finished many figurines since adopting this pastime. A little boy of ten pouring over every boolc on airplanes he could find-then the first plane ride at thirteen-and the flying lessons that followed--all these add up to Bob's hobby. The thrill of soloing came on his sixteenth birthday, then work in earnest for his license. ln Bob's own words he tells us, "After many more hours in the air, with countless check flights, my instructor finally decided that l was at last competent to carry passengers. The long awaited dream came true." Late last summer the C.A.A. awarded him the coveted pilots license. 25 CLASS DIRECTORY The Funniest THQ Mod Musical The M051 Studifms Most Ploasinq P4-rsonality The Ouietelat The Most Athletic Most Likely to Succeed Shortest and Tallest 26 in wa JUNIOR GIRLS First row, lett to right: Barbara Trubislcy, Lois Barnhart, Gladys Atkinson, Doris I-lughes, Joan Cease, Sally Passrnore, Eleanor Seely, Lina Maynard, Delores Sivers. The club was divided into seven committees which included all ot the forty-three mem- bers. Each committee had the responsibility ot planning and directing a meeting. Although eleven members will be graduated this year, tho band will still carry on its excellent worlc. 4 I MADRIGALS The Madrigal group is a new facet ot the schools music department, having been started early this year by Miss Woodin. The purpose ot madrigal singing is to show the customs of middle-age nobility, in that often after a banquet was tin- ished, the lords and their ladies would sit around the banquet table and sing unac- companied part songs tor their own enioyment. The Madrigals have given public performances tor the Monday Club. for the school's annual vocal concert, and for the tenth anniversary services commemorating the completion ot the Methodist Church at South Montrose. 42 LIFE STAFF it First row, lett to right: Nelson Craiqe, Sue Lake, Neil Andre, Lola Twining, Paul Harrison, Nancy Ely leditorl, Carolyn Herne, Dorothy Sherman, Vonda Coy. The otlicers are: President, Tom Lewis: Vice President, Amie Kattusg Secretary, .lanice Bush: Treasurer, Ray Smith. This club is tor sophomores, iuniors, and seniors only. 44 J 45 GIRLS' BASKETBALL Because the varsity members ot last year's team were graduated. this year's squad was not se successful as those ot previous years. But what the girls lacked in experience they made up tor in their splendid team work and sportsmanship. Miss Carman, our new coach, was taced with the ditticult task ot building a team trom inexperienced players. Even though the scoreboolc didn't show it, she was always there urging us on. We are certain that next year's team will be greatly improved and a challenge to other teams. 46 BOYS' BASKETBALL Not since l939, which is a long time ago, has Montrose turned in such an admirable pertormance. The town, which has long awaited a winning team, was rewarded when ours completed the season with a I6-5 record. As predicted last year, the team finished up the season with flying colors, and we toresee even greater things tor the tuture. Under the dynamic coaching ot Mr. Manning, Jim Arnold, Russell 'lButch" Gil- bert, Ted Palmer, Clarence "Junie" Evans, Bill Dean, and all the others came through in time fashion. The tour graduating seniors, Ralph Kudart, Paul Harrison, Frank Moger, and lion Krna, will all miss the swell fellows on the team as well as Mr. Manning. The team will lose a good scrimmage squad by their graduation. 47 CHEERLEADERS The game is tied, a time out is called, and onto the tloor rush tive girls in maroon and white. With a peppy "Hip Hilo," they lead the tense crowd in a well- lcnown cheer to urge the team on. Feeling that the crowd is with them, they are inspired to tight to the tinish. These girls have what it takes to lead the cheers-- vitality, vigor, and versatility. Yes, girls, you did a time job. Congratulations to you all, and so long to Carolyn and Ann. 48 BASEBALL The I95O baseball season was a short and discouraging one tor the Montrose tans. The team ended up with a O and 4 record that could hardly be classed as impressive. To all outward appearances the team looked to be a winner, but bad weather, bad breaks, and surprising inadeptness ot the batters combined to swing the balance in the other direction. The tive graduating seniors, Bob Bennett, Mike Flanagan, Frank Moger, Doug Hart, and Del Potts wish the next year's team the best ot luck and thank Mr. Snyder tor the help and guidance he 'gave them.
