D Q' OR DIVISION Communications is piulwalnly the least ui'tc,lei'e s1ood ioh on board ship, Communication oven' hundreds and often thousands of miles requires the utmost in patience, durability, and skill. LT Curtis Reaves and the thirteen radiomen on board MONTROSE have the important iob of maintaining ship to ship, and ship to shore communications onatwenty-four hour basis. The MONTROSE Radio Gang has rapidly matured into a highly effective communicating force. The gang lived up to its potential in Vung Tau. While supporting Rivron Nine the traffic load tripled and the working hours of eighteen to twenty hours a day were not at all uncommon. While enroute to Hong Kong, Radioman Second Class Jack Edwards inter- cepted a distress call from the SS Winsome, which was burning and about to sink. MONTROSE became the On Scene Commander , and coordinated the rescue operation. Once again the Radiomen contributed greatly to MONTROSE's out- standing reputation. The men in radio process several thousand messages received via the fleet teletype broadcast monthly. Outgoing messages often number in the hundreds.
