Nagasaki CMONTROSE SPQTLIGHTD Flash: Nagasaki, japan. 23 April, 1954. The USS MONTROSE LAPA 2121 pulled away from the Dejima Pier in Naga- saki this afternoon with throngs of people waving their best lapanese sayonara. Serpentine and con- fetti hunq in bright festoons of color between the Ship and the dock as banners were waved in sin- cere farewell. Those members of the ship's com- pany that were especially cordial with the citizenry found themselves the recepients of several gay presentos. The shifting of colors this afternoon end- ed one of the most pleasant stays in any port since the Montrose left San Diego over two months ago. Montrose sailors found Nagasaki awaiting with open arms and now look forward to a speedy re- turn. Few are the Montrose sailors who would not support the above article from the ship's newspaper and Nagasaki will be remembered as one of the very best liberty ports in the Far East. Sightseers and photographers had a field day viewing every- thing from the remains of the atomic bomb blast and Ground Zero, to the home of the romantic Madame Butterfly. lt was a sobering experience to see the ruins of what had been the largest Catholic church in the Ear East, twisted steel girdaizs thousands of yards from the blast center, mishappen tile turned to liquid when the blast occured, and the figures telling of 74,000 people killed and 70,000 injured. Ori the lighter side was the sliipls pctrty ltarltl in the Florida Club. An outstanding atlair in all it.-. spects, it has taken its place in 212 history as onf of the best. Mention must be made as well ot the more elite, but just as successful party held by the members of our ichiban basketball team.
