The USS MONTROSE LAPA 2121 pulled away from the Dejima Pier in Naga- saki this afternoon with throngs of people waving their best lapanese sayonara. Serpentine and con- fetti hunq in bright festoons of color between the Ship and the dock as banners were waved in sin- cere farewell. Those members of the ship's com- pany that were especially cordial with the citizenry found themselves the recepients of several gay presentos. The shifting of colors this afternoon end- ed one of the most pleasant stays in any port since the Montrose left San Diego over two months ago. Montrose sailors found Nagasaki awaiting with open arms and now look forward to a speedy re- turn. Few are the Montrose sailors who would not support the above article from the ship's newspaper and Nagasaki will be remembered as one of the very best liberty ports in the Far East. Sightseers and photographers had a field day viewing every- thing from the remains of the atomic bomb blast and Ground Zero, to the home of the romantic Madame Butterfly. lt was a sobering experience to see the ruins of what had been the largest Catholic church in the Ear East, twisted steel girdaizs thousands of yards from the blast center, mishappen tile turned to liquid when the blast occured, and the figures telling of 74,000 people killed and 70,000 injured. Ori the lighter side was the sliipls pctrty ltarltl in the Florida Club. An outstanding atlair in all it.-. spects, it has taken its place in 212 history as onf of the best. Mention must be made as well ot the more elite, but just as successful party held by the members of our ichiban basketball team. The harbor was titled with ships from every nation in the world. 'There were people everywhere. Thousands of re- tugees irom Communist China unrolled their mats and slept on the sidewalks. Stern native policemen directed and unsnarled traffic. Turbanned Indians stood before their shops, and through the crowded streets hurried oriental beauties wearing those entic- ing slit skirts. A whole new world opens up just a few steps off the main streets and up the back alloys, This is one of the steep side streets that leads back to Chinese markets, side- walk restaurants and native shops. 2 Q H li Small boats swarmed about the Montrose whenever we pulled into Hong Kong. Here a small boy dives over the side after a coin thrown from the ship. KOREA Guild craftsman plying his trade Baby Sitter problem solved Nan... Inchon and Sokcho Ri All hands, especially those of us in the boats, will agree that our LEX at Sokcho Ri was one of the best organized on record. We don't know how the adrnirals evaluate it, but to the boys in the boats and at the debark stations, it was what an amphibious operation ought to be. A touch of ground swell made some of the troops unhappy, but then, War is hell. The beach was a long, golden strand, ideal for a different kind of beach party. The hinterland, as seen frorn the transport area, was beautiful and the air was cool. lust a few miles north of us at Sokcho Ri was the 38th parallel and the truce dernarkation line. The operation was not without tragedy. An Okanogan sailor was killed when he fell through a hatch and a plane was lost at sea. Everything was shipshape on the Montrose however, and we steamed back to lnchon to ofiload our troops. We picked up our worst impressions of Korea in lnchon, the bombed out and beaten city that seemed to have carried more than its share ot damage. The streets were torn and dirty, the peo- ple, many oi them driven from their homes in the north, were roaqed and hungry. We witnessed a dtvpressii'ig atterniath of war. lnchon offered little in the way ot liberty and we were glad to up anchor and li- rad south. Chinhae, Korea Up to the time that we anchored OH Chinhae, Sc-utli Korea, late in luly, most of us had seen Korea onE'y at lnchon, Pusan, and Sokcho Ri. Despite the natural beauty of the beach at Sokcho Hi with US high mountain peaks beyond and the picturesque harbor of Ptzsan, impressions ol this war-torn Coun- try were an the dismal side. Chinhae and the won- derful hasrgitality of her people, however, showed US a different side oi the country. Chinhae was Cool and quiet, even with the bustling training activities that ':cntinue night and day in preparedness for de- fense. ln Chinhae, we witnessed the Republic oi Kcrea Naval Academy, as well as the boot camp where basic seamanship is taught the recruits of a young and growing Navy. Here also the HOK Ma- rines train intensively. While in Chinhae, We had both midshipmen and the marines aboard for in- doctrination in amphibious warfare, which included an abbreviated One Able. Facilities for liberty ashore in Chinhae were limited, but sightseeing tours both ashore and by boat were arranged. Short, but honorable mention must also be made of Dui'fy's Tavern, the EM club set up in town by the U.S. Naval Advisory Group. 4: .2 'UNC f l W i ' I- we may a 'I 5 ga N l . Korean Friend SHIMUNUSEKI-INLAND SEA There are few places in the world where a ship can pass over railroad tracks but the Montrose did it three times in sailing through the Straits of Shimo- noseki, a narrow strip of water separating the is- lands of Kyushu and Honshu. Only a few hundred yards wide, the channel is a real test oi seaman- ship and shiphandling, with strong currents adding to the difficulties. A main railroad connecting the two islands runs through a long tunnel under the vvater. Steaming through Shimonoseki on three different runs prepared us tor a trip up to Kobe via the Inland Sea, which is dotted with islands, large and small, Narrow channels are the rule rather than the ex- ception. The lnland Sea runs between Honshu and Shilcoku which is known as the Riveria of Iapan, Tiny villages dot the rugged shore line. Small coves protect golden beaches, some of them crowded with people enjoying the natural beauty of their islands. Hundreds of fishing boats, most of them flying their white sails, shuttle back and forth through the green water. lt was a beautiful and pleasant trip, one which few naval ships attempt. ,..,,J1g t', l .,.,,,3 sax' li ' Lg il, 1 if - ' , M bg' o fhffff --iff . Balajadia go over C2 'cn I5 Six Little indians Three Of A Kind Boffoms Up CON DUUNG TU C0 CUA BAN One of the greatest operations ever undertaken by the United States Navy was the Passage to Freedom evacuation of Vietnamese refugees from Communist domination It was a long, tough opera- tion, hot and timing, but interesting and gratifying in all respects. And always in the Passage to Preedorn was the Montrose, carrying more than her share, commended by the division commander for carry- ing the mostest fastest. We arrived in Tourane Bay, our main supply base for the operation, in mid-August, then pointed north to Henriette Pass near Haiphong where we loaded up without delay. The Vietnamese refugees, tired, hungry, frightened and discouraged, were brought to us frorn Haiphong by French landing craft. We were the second ship to get underway with a full load and when we tied up in Saigon a few days later, correspondents, newsreel and TV cameramen thranged aboard. Adniiral Stump, Coni- mander in Chief Pacirific: Fl-3:-et, rnc-t the sfiip and carrie aboard to observe the refugees: and to visit Caztain Andrew. Liberty in Sciigcjvn was ulirrt, and expensive and we headed back down the Saigon River, ready for more passengers. The pictures on these pages speak more elo- quently of the people that are carried than is possi- ble in words. A few died from malnutrition, starved before they reached us. More were born, and, in fact, the Montrose carried the birth record with seven arrivals. The families were hungry and our galley worked night and day to cook enough rice and fish to feed them, lt is a tribute to the Navy and the Montrose that the refugees left the ship, happier, stronger, and in much better condition than when they arrived. Aside from a very few short breaks in Sai- gon, liberty in lndo-China just wasn't. The long, monotonous hauls were broken, however, by swim- ining parties in Tourane and near Haiphong. And then, finally, after four trips, we passed Cape St. lacaues for the last time, picked up that wonderful inail at Tourane, and headed north to cool, cool lapan, via Hong Kong.
