success of the 1944 1045 school year Organization meetings took a good share of the time of duose representatives chosen by the junior senior high school students However, several imoortant projects were ander taken during the second semester Probably the most important contribution the Student Council made toward bettering the school was the Safety Patrol The council members deemed it necessary to organize the patrol not only to protect the school children from possible accidents, but also thought it wise to create the patrol as an educational project on good citizenship A Sanitation bommlttee was appointed by Inma Schoon, Student Council presl dent, and this committee conducted an aggressive campaign against misuse of school oroperty and better care of the lockers This com lttee also urged Monti students to refrain from walking on the grass about the school The Bulletin Board Committee made the bulletin boards around the school more meaningful to the students, and they also made them much more attractive to the eye Irma Schoon, one of the junior representatives, was elected president of the Student Council with Dick Sutherland serving as vice president and Louise York as secretary trea surer Other delegates who served so well on the council are seniors, Selma Otten, Her man Diers, and Clark Shannon, juniors, Gene Kuehl, sophomores, Betty Hoult, and Raymond Rieniets, freshman, Bernice Schmidt, and Berkley Holmes, eighth, Marjorie Hoffman, seventh, Gleason McMichael, faculty, Miss Cruise, Miss G Smith, Miss Wood, and Mr Eells The l944 1945 charter members of the BOVVY LOU v Jennie Rundle, Beverly Harms jUNlQR5 Dick Skellef has served the junior class as president during the past year, with Irma Cchoon as vice-president The junior year is always a busy one, and the members of the class of 1946 have taken an active part in many important school events One of the high points of the year was the annual magaz'ne sale which kept the entire class very busy for several weeks The clasp was divided into two teams under the direction of the general chairman, Irma Schoon Under the leadership of Claire Shannon, captain of the Red team, and Betty Lou Null, leader of the Black team, the juniors again successfully topped the sales of the previous year with a total of 81,660 worth of ma azines Many members of the class received prizes in war stamps for their sales, but Jo Ann Schneider and Carol Cas- cers, the two top salesmen, each received a S25 war bond Another high spot in the activities was the junior class play, 'You Can't Take It With You This play was under the direction of Mrs Bess Greenley, and, with the lndus- trious co-operation of the cast and crew, it was a great success. Although the cast did put in a great deal of time and effort, they received a great deal of enjoyment out of lt. Many of the junior boys have been interested in athletics, and Ken Kibumz, Dick Skel- ley, Art Bolken, and Frank Fita mmons earned major 'M's' by playing the required length of time during games. Inna Schoon, Louise York, and Gene Kuehl were elected as junior representatives to the newly organized Student Council. Irma Schoon and Louise York were chosen to serve as president and secretary-treasurer, respectively, of this All class members took part in the preparation for group. the Junior-Senior Banquet which will long be remembered as one of the outstanding events of the school yearn Jo Ann Schneider and Gene Kuehl have been active in music as vocal soloists, while many other class members have taken part in various instrumental and vocal groups. L The football season of l944 was very interesting and beneficial from the standpoint of the boys who parti ioated The season beaan with Monticello winning two games and the season also ended with two winnings Looking back over the games ln which we trailed, as far as scoring was concerned, we see that it was always a close score except for one name KI wonder what happened that timevl Before our first ame, which was with Maquoketa, Coach Crlmmings and the boys were very nervous about how the game would turn out They had reason to worry, for every one of the football boys were playing a different position from the year before When the last senior class graduated, they took with them all the backfield and sub lvl stltutes This left Coach Crlmmlngs with the job of supplying a new backfleld for the team The boys chosen to do this were Bud Griffith, quarterback, LaVern Rickels, lefthalf, Ken Kiburz, fullback and Captain Dick Bonwell, rivhthalf The lineup was composed of all inexperienced men except for Art Bolken who had seen action the year before. Even though inexperienced, they showed that they had love for the sport and that more practice was sure to bring out the best in them. The score of the Maquoketa game was 2l to O, in our favor. This made the boys feel as though they had accomplished something. them will Our next game was with Manchester They outwelghted us considerably, but we held and went for two touchdowns. The rest of the schedule was as follows' Monticello lost to Marion, 7 to 83 we lost Tipton 7 to O3 lest Branch made a score of 21 to our score of 13: just by one point, lt. Vernon won, 6 to 73 we won, however, from lest Liberty 21 to Og and we also beat Anamosa this year with a score of l5 to O. Next year we hope that all of these losses will be reversed, and we're sure that they be. i S g . 4: Y 13 -tl 1 Q as ' ' f ' - 9,1 te. 4. 1 ' dl' 's - , Q ' 5 x 1 y Q -. -- f, ' l . . ' Q.
