Because he is such a wonderful friend, coach, and teacher, we wish to express our thanks to him. As a teacher he helps us gain greater knowledge. As a coach he shows us sportsmanship, and helps us to go far in sports. As a. friend he is always willing to help us solve our problems and is willing to join us in our less-serious moments. To show our gratitude to Mr. Jones, we the class of 1958 dedicate this fourteenth edition of the Mon-Echo. We were bashful at first, but it didn't take us long to get acquainted. Miss La Rue, who is no longer teaching at Monticello, was our teacher that year. During the years to come we would all be to g e the r . Of the twenty graduating students there are only ten of us who began at Monticello. Others have come and some have gone. As we turnfarther, Father time lets us stop for a while at the year 1953-54 when we were eighth graders. That year we became acquainted with twelve new students from Busick Elementary School. Mr. Mur ray was our teacher and our advisor on the annual we made that year. We also made our first trip to Raleigh. Now as time goes by we stop a while in high school. The year was 1954-55. Mrs. Crutchfield was our sponsor and for class officers we chose: Carolyn Lewis as Presidentg Dean Green as Vice Presidentg as Secretary, Garrett Chrismong and as Treasurer, Ralph McClellan. It took us quite a while to settle down butwe finally did and began to studv even harder. The year was 1955-56 when we entered our year as sophomores withflying colors. Speaking ot colors during that year we chose our class colors which are Red 8: White. Our class flower is a red rose and our motto is What we are to be we are now Becoming, this has meant a lot to us. Mrs. Hopkins was our advisor. For Class Officers we chose: Bob Gordon as Pre sident: Joe McMillan as Vice Presidentg Carolyn Lewis as Sec retary and as Treasurer, Garrett Chrismon. I guess the last two years will be most remembered bv us. The year was 1956 and 1957. We areJuniors andproud to have Mrs. Hopkins back as our advisor. For Class Officers we chose: President-Carolyn Lewisg Vice President-Harry Jones: Betsy Huffine s as Secretary and we chose Carolyn Hill for Treasurer. We gave our play November 17, 1956 and the name of it was Boarding House Reach. We thought it was a great success. We received our class rings during February and this made us Juniors for sure. On May 17, 1957 we had our Junior-Senior Banquet at Meyers Tea Room in Greensboro. For ente rtainrnent we had a group from Jamestown. The year is now 1958 and, yes, we are the Senior this year. There is no one to look up to any more because they all look up to us now. This was to be our best year at Monticello . We had as our advisor Dr. Nicholson. Dean Green was President with Bob Go rdon as Vice Presidentg Harry .Tones was Secretary andGa.rrett Chrismon was chosen Treasurer. Everyone really enjoyed the trip to Washington. Our Senior Play was a great success and it helped us to get to Washington. The highlight of our Senior year will bewhen we get our diplomas. we want to thank the Juniors for the nice Banquet they gave us. To everyone we leave only memories of us as we leave good old M.H.S. We did try and we have succeeded, we hope. HISTORIAN -Patsy Bishop 17 Glass Prophecy ln these ceremonial flames I see a strange smoke has arisen, the smoke is clearing and some letters appear: one, nine, six, eight, 1968, ten years from this day. Wait let me see what it has to say. The numbers recede and instead a human form appears. I believe it's Sandra Gunter, who is teaching Rock 'n Roll lessons at the Arthur Murray Studio in Chicago. She seems to be talking to someone. Oh yes, it's Arnold Brinkley who has just gotten back to the States after being stationed with the Unite d States Army in Japan. Who are these girlsl see coming. Both are dressedin white. Why it's Ann Bowman and Toni Brande. They are nurses at the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D. C. Esther Pickr ell and Belva Jean Shepherd are happy just keeping house for their husbands. Hark! Do I hear music ? Yes and it is coming from Hollywood, Calif. It is the music of Keith Gunn and his Swing Band Orchestra, and let me add, Keith has recently taken the place of Benny Goodman as the noted Swing Band leader. Garrett Chrisman is doing nicely as superintendent of th e Guilford County Schools. Now I see a book. Turning the cover back I see the bookis titled How to Become aSuccess in Life and it was written by the famous author Kenneth Brann. Beside the book lies a newspaper and glancing at the headlines I notice a familiar name. Bob Gordon has just been elected a Congressman by alarge majority. He has selectedas his secretary, Mary Snider, who will do all his secretarial work and accompany him on a tour of the nation. I see a school house. Why it's M.H.S. Two familiar looking girls are going up the steps. Itls Linda Strader and Carolyn Hill. They are both teaching in the grammar-grades here. I see Elizabeth Bailey. She says she is enjoying working at Liberty Hosiery Mill. Whatis this huge fieldl see. It's Yankee Stadium and just as we thought, Dean Green is their star catcher. He was voted the most valuable player of the American League last year. Andwho is he talking to? It's Patsy Bishop who is doing swell as a news- paper reporter for the New York Times. HarryJones is now the manager of the largest Guilford Dairy Bar in Guilford County. Howard Hedrick reallylet his 4 years of agriculture pay off. He has afarm that has been chosen as one of the ten best in North Carolina. Betsy Huffines comes into view. She is the 4-H Chairman of Rockingham County. Betsy says she really loves her work. As for me I enjoy working for Interior Decorators, Inc. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
