The organization is gradually reaching a completion of perfect instrumentation which was begun in 1937. At that time the band owned one mellophone, two basses and one bass drum. Since then the following instruments have been added, all owned by the band as an organization: one set of tympanig four French hornsg one bass drurng two additional bassesg four snare drums. This has been in addition to the purchase of eight uniforms for band, and four drum-major outfits. The band has one of the largest music libraries in the state. Citation cords were purchased this year for all uniforms to further ornament the uniforms. In 1938 the band was awarded second place in band in the annual North-South contest held at Charleston and the following year at Webster Springs was awarded first prize in the annual Rhododendron Festival held there, competing against some of the best bands of the state. In the contest at Charleston, Sara Lee Jenkins and Charles Tabit were awarded first prize for the best girl and boy drum-majors, respectively. The Greyhound Band was organized in 1926, by H. H. Bowman, who held the position until 1937, when he was succeeded by J. B. Ulp, the present director. :L Page Forty-five
