MEMBERSHIP: The National Honor Society is composed of Juniors and Seniors selected according to scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Once a year new members are formally initiated into the Society by a ceremony in which the president extends a welcome to the new members, the pledge is taken by the new mem- bers and cards of membership are presented. A guest speaker talks on education. This year Mr. Edward S. Maclin, President of New River State College, made the addre-S. SYMBOL: The burning torch is the symbol of the Society and it represents the Torch of Learning. PURPOSE: To create a desire for learning, both in high school and following graduation from high school. MEETINGS: Regular meetings are held once a month during which a round table discussion is brought about by a speaker who talks on education-the meaning, the require- ments, the value, or some particular phase of education, such as music or art appreciation, book reviews, developments in medical or other science, the European situation, or other subjects of that nature. Every since Arnold Vickers, present mayor of Montgomery, edited the first Siren in the year of 1925, the school publication has been awarded honors and prizes which has placed the paper in 'the scholastic publication lime-light both nationally and inter-nationally. The present adviser, Mr. Hopkins, received his first newspaper training on the Siren, serving as a member of its stalf from 1928 to 1931. He has been the sponsor of the publication for the last five years. The awards won by the Siren are as follows: Fist Place Award,', 1933, 1934, 1936, 1938, 1939, Honor Award, Class B, 1934, 1936, Southern Interscholastic Press Association. First Place, 1933, 1940. Pell, M. Roeser, H. Goheen, E. Lawson, G. Clark, M. F. Dyer, J. Plymale, M. Farley. Girl Reserves, a division of the Young Women's Christian Association, organized in Montgomery High School in 1926, is one of the oldest and most active clubs in school. Since 1928 it has been sponsored by Mrs. Wilkinson. The purpose of Girl Reserves is to develop high school girls along the three-fold line of body, mind, and spirit. Consequently, the yearls work is built around spiritual, mental, and social activities. The weekly meetings with programs planned and executed by the girls aim to develop the mental and spiritual side. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas the club adopts a family for which it provides food, boys, and even articles of clothing. For the past eight years it has presenrted to the school a gift, ranging from special speakers brought in and all girl teas to gifts of a bulletin board, dictionary, a clock, and other articles for the use of the whole school. All money for these activities is earned by the girls through candy sales and other enterprises. For the physical side the club maintains a basketball team, which this year won the intra-mural trophy, and other athletic groups, and it also enjoys hikes and picnics. The chief social event of the group is the annual Spring formal dance, given this year in honor of St. Patrick's day. 7.-Q X Page Thirty nme
