Genuine school spirit has many aspects. Mature school spirit is manifest in the
support of and participation in the whole of college life, inside as well as outside of
the classrooms. Participation in art, music, science, as well as all of the classwork
depicted in this annual, is evidence of the developing school spirit here at Northern.
With this increased interest goes responsibility for action. In the publication, Student
Participation in College Administration, Dr. Frances E. Falvey said, 'Alf student par-
ticipation is making the most of its opportunities, it will serve to develop interest in
the school, increase school spirit, and improve the morale of the college community.
These are not times for school spirit to be identified with athletic orgies of cinematic
proportions or thousand-dollar proms. The work of the school is, oddly enough, edu-
cation-education with its many aspects and facets. School spirit is that inspiration and
enthusiasm which come in the process of education, from contact with people and ideas
greater than the self, from consciousness of a living tradition of selfless service, from
cooperation toward truly great ends, from the consciousness of the broad goals of
Maturing school spirit at Northern is generally guided by the six purposes of the
college found in our catalog. These purposes become truly great ends for our school,
and in general, fit in with the broad goals of America, which lead us ever onward
toward the good life we dream about. There are many great ideas in this Western
World of which we are a part. Contact with these great ideas comes primarily through
education with its many aspects, including both classroom work as well as co-curricular
Sooner or later, we must all become aware of the idea that selfless service to our
fellow men is the greatest contributor to real happiness. There seems to be a conscious-
ness in mankind which properly developed makes it possible for us to live together
more effectively. This consciousness is also a part of school spirit. The real heart of
school spirit is in the definition quoted above. Attendance at games, at community
concerts, at dances, and the excellent support of the Havre Booster Club of Northern
Montana College are outward manifestations that real school spirit exists here at
But sometimes the less tangible performances have greater significance than the out-
ward aspects. These evidences may be expressed in constructive attitudes toward North-
ern Montana College among parents and friends in off-campus situations. They may
be found in classroom eagerness to gain knowledge and ideas. They may be found in
assistance to fellow students with scholastic problems, such as through the athletic
study table. They may be found in cooperation with others for social and cultural im-
All these constitute school spirit within the framework of campus life.
