As hare as it may be for freshmen to imagine, college does not last forever. This fact often comes as a shock to students who suddenly realize that they're seniors and will soon have a degree. This thought also brings up the big question— What am I going to do after graduation? N It is at this point that Tom Messick. the Director of Career Placement, appears on the scene. Messick has been the Director since 1969 and does a very commendable job. He tries to get companies to come to the campus to interview students who could fit the needs of the company. The peak year for companies was in 1969 when 282 of them came to the campus. That number dropped to 121 in 1972, but rose to 180 companies in 1977 and the 1978 total will be over 210. Engineers are far and away the most sought-after graduates. About sixty percent of the companies coming to campus are looking for engineers. The large number of companies does not lessen the competition for jobs, however. Lines develop early on Monday morning (usually about five o'clock) on second floor of Reid Hall. The purpose of the people in these lines is to get signed up for the maximum number of interview spots. The number of spots on the interview sheet is limited and is filled on a first-come first-serve basis; therefore, the early bird does indeed get the worm. y 25
