MOODS Moods were balanced on a thread darkened by the heavy overhanging clouds dampened by the constant drizzle. Sleep came easily, though, and when I awoke this morning my heart soared like a swallow. Sol was streaming through the window-panes spreading its warmth across my body scattering the mist that swirled around my world. Images of you flowed lazily, and I basked in the light of your memories. 24 Sylvia Glenn

Lilac bushes stretching gnarled fingers toward a frost-nipped sky lacing wind in their branches. Mittened hands groping inside a wooden apple crate; a cave where she crawled and birthed the frozen forms silken fur plastered against the stiff blue skin. One small mew tiny spastic steps tell me one escaped the cold. Trying to stoke life in a dying furnace only prolonging pain Searching for an old sweater to shroud the tiny form I note the muddy footprints on the back of the scrapbook lying there; a self-written epitaph. Sinking back in murky twilight into scratching dust covered grass listen to the distant lawn-mower drone and the last call of the bird before settling in feather fluffed sleep Alone in the tall grass I gloat that no one can find me. Watching spiders and ants crawl in and out of dead matted jungles smelling earth odors and barbeque smoke choosing to ignore the sound of my name as someone screams it across the yard. Oh damn. Vm found. Wagging his tail like a flag grinning at his own cleverness my dog slobbers on me. Linda Quigley
