The introduction of students to membership on two important former exclusively administrative committees this year was an attempt by Student Senate to provide a student voice in committees concerned with decisions affecting both the entire campus and individual students. Two students were appointed to the Calendar Committee — the group that determines when quarters begin and end and when school holidays will be. One suggestion that came out of this committee during Winter Quarter was starting the school year immediately after Labor Day in the Fall and ending the year by late May. It was hoped that such an arrangement would facilitate equalizing the lengths of quarters — thus preventing the short Winter Quarter and thus making it possible to have an entire week of finals after each quarter — not just after Fall Quarter. A final decision had not been made by the end of Winter Quarter. Student members were appointed this year to the Student Judicial Committee — the campus conduct committee — which formerly was composed entirely of faculty and administrative members. After the first publishing of the Academics Effectiveness Committee booklet this Fall, the committee changed its format from a questionnaire to an evaluation-type plan. With the resignation of its chair-man in the middle of Winter Quarter, this committee became indefinitely nonfunctioning, however. A Senate Constitution Revision Committee was appointed by ASMSU officers during the Fall with their report made during Winter Quarter. Suggestions made, but not immediately acted upon, included the creation of a bicameral legislature — with commissioners comprising an Advisory Finance House and representative mem-bers from Colleges within the university making up the lower decision-making House.
