Administration To My Student Friends: As this is written a war is being waged in Viet Nam and an uncertain na- tion ponders its problems of prosperity and poverty, accord and discord, human rights and license, order and chaos. Its people are searching for new goals to sustain them, a new faith to comfort them and new leaders to direct them. Revolutions seem to be the order of the day. Not slow evolutions of ideas and traditions but rapid, drastic changes which create new moralities and flout traditions and conventions that once were so comfortable. There are revolutions of emergence, of bondaged peoples seeking a place in the sun. There are revolutions of science and technology which seem constantly to shrink our small planet into even smaller dimensions and to telescope a myriad of events in ever briefer cycles. Then there are among us, as always, the purveyors of gloom and doom, the cynics immune to both hope and despair and, of course, those who, like Lotls wife, are always looking backward, seeking to petrify progress. Their combined voices are a cacophony obscuring the true symphony of our time. But there is hope and it comes from our interest in a search for better answers. And our hope lieswith you, for you are demanding new answers to old questions never answered satisfactorily before. You seek a relevance for your lives and your education, and your insistence on these things is not going unnoticed. You can, if you will, make this planet a bit more habitable for all. You can open windows to vistas never viewed before, you can give hope to millions who have never known it. The world awaits you and time will test your zeal and measure your faith. Perhaps you will find that great victories are not won by idle wishes or eloquent phrases, but by dedication and sacrifice. Perhaps you will find, too, that love and altruism are not just objects of the cynics' scorn. Perhaps you will discover that time passes not in disjointed spurts but in a con- tinuous stream and that the past is linked through the present to the future, that your tomorrows will also be someones yesterdays.
