School H1SfOIY of Monroe The frrst school burldrng to be burlt rn Monroe townshrp was erected rn 1825 and was located one half mrle southeast of West Manchester The structure was burlt of logs Men came from therr homes wlth axes and saws and after three days of fellmg trees and hewmg logs etc the burldrng was ready for occupancy The burldrng was of hewn logs notched at the ends to allow them to l1e close and the spaces between the logs were frlled wrth wooden wedges and then plas tered wrth blue clay The roof was of clapboalds fastened down wlth poles A puncheon floor and cerlrng as well as the door were made by splrttrng logs and hewmg the one slde makrng a farrly level surface Wooden preces were fastened rn the logs of the walls and puncheon slabs were lard on these wooden arms to be used by the puorls as desks Benches were also hewn out for seats These benches had no backs and were far from comfortable A hole was cut rn the wall and thrn tanned fawn skm stretched over the openrng for lrghtrng A frreplace at one end of the burldmg furnrshed the heat Jerry Pence was the frrst teacher The salar5 of the teacher was provrded by subscrrptron and amounted to about three cents per puprl per day Chrldren from West Manchester as well as from the surroundrng communrty attended thrs school untrl 1874 when a burldrng was erected rn West Manchester and the school was transferred to the latter place In 1846 a central school burldrng was planned for the frrst trme Thrs burldrng was located acros the creek on the hrll a lrttle southwest of the present home of the Janrtor of Monroe school Thrs burldmg was to be strrctly modern rn every way and a great deal of rnterest was manrfested rn rts plans For the frrst time aschool rn Monroe townshrp was to have a floor and cerlrng f tongued and grooved or matched lumber The orled paper or fawn skm wrndow was to be re placed by one havrng four panes of glass each erght mches by ten mches Instead of the usual frreplace a stove was to be purchased rn which wood could be burned The contractor agreed to have the burldrng completed by November first so that a three months school term could begm He was to recerve S75 00 for hrs labor The teacher recerved S16 2 3 per month or a total of S50 00 for the school term of three months Other communrtres erected school bulldrngs rn much the same manner Eventually under state supervrsron the varrous drstrrcts were brought together and methods of rnstructron gradual ly became unrform Monroe townshrp for a generatron or more malntarned a school burldmg rn the center of each of nrne school drstrrcts each drstrrct bemg two mrles square In the later years before consolrdatron the townshrp employed a superrntendent of schools who supervrsed the work of the teachers and puprls In 1892 two separate hrgh schools were organrzed and for the first trme rn rts hlstory Mon roe tovsnshrp offered a hrgh school course to rts boys and glrls One was held at what rs known as the Hamburg School The two story burldrng rs strll standrng bemg at present a storage barn for farm tools Mr Noah Ware was the frrst hrgh school teacher at Hamburg and after teach rng one year was succeeded by Albert Mendenhall who also taught a year After that the school was drscontmued At West Manchester the hrgh chool was housed rn the present burldmg erected rn 1886 A three year course was offered and Mr George Buck was the frrst teacher The first class completed the course rn the sprmg of 1895 Those who graduated were Charles Hoffman Cora Creager Holtzmuller Ida Mae Bruner and Sadre Trone Wolverton In 1900 the town of West Manchester was lncorporated and the West Manchester school drs trrct came mto exrstence Thrs left the townshrp wrthout a hrgh school and for a number of years graduates of Monroes common school courses were allowed to attend elther Eldorado or West Manchester hrgh schools the Board of Educatron of the townshrp payrng the turtron In 1910 after attemptrng unsuccessfully a number of trmes to establrsh a central hrgh school burldrng for the accommodatron of rts common chool graduates the townshrp elected to consoh date Grounds were acqurred and the present Monroe school burldrng was erected The frrst term of school rn the present burldrng was begun rn the fall of 191: 1C E Schlotlerbeclt.
