USS MONONGAHELA Keeping ships at sea. That is the mission of the Norfolk homeported USS MONONGAHELA (AO-178) and the fleet oiler is doing just that. On Dec. 7, in the Indian Ocean. MONONGAHELA successfully com- pleted its sooth under way replenish- ment (UNREP) since commissioning in 1981. The customer for the historic occasion was USS SCOTT (DDG-995), another Norfolk-based ship. To celebrate the occasion, a cake- cutting ceremony was held on MO- NONGAHELA and a plaque was pre- sented to SCOTT. USS MONONGAHELA, with a crew of 170 enlisted and 13 officers, was kept busy during 1985, complet- ing nearly half of her 500 lifetime UNREPS during that year. During READEX 3085 alone, MONONGA- HELA conducted 70 under way re- plenishments, an unusually high fig- ure for a fleet exercise. MONONGAHELA is currently on an Indian Ocean deployment that has taken it over half way around the world. Since departing Norfolk the oiler has visited Rota, Spain; Palma De Mallorca; Naples, Italy; Cagliari, Sicily; Augusta Bay; transited the Suez Canal, and visited Diego Garcia, Sin- gapore and Subic Bay. Providing first-rate refueling ser- vices to battle groups from the Sec- ond, Sixth and Seventh fleets has en- hanced MONONGAHELA ' s reputa- tion as THE WORLD ' S FINEST OILER.
