From bringing a diverse bunch of sailors together for the first time and making them a cohesive unit, to testing each and every communications system onboard to maintaining divisional moral at the highest possible level and still getting the job done has been the utmost challenge which I could not have accomplished without the group of sailors I have in OC division. They deserve all the credit, I was just the guide. E l fa 1 BOATSWAIN ' S MATE (BM) One of the oldest traditional ratings in the United States Navy. BMs are the e.xperts in deck seamanship. They maintain the machinen, ' and equipment topside , handle cargo and operate small boats. They also maintain the clean the ship ' s exterior, conduct underw ay refueling and assist in ship ' s na igation. DECK SEAMAN The Deck Seaman are the ship ' s deck maintenance work force. They assist the Boatswain ' s Mates in operating deck equipment and in maintaining topside spaces.
