Mr. Lamonf Hulfgren, serving his second year as principal of MHS, is a man of many responsibilifies. This busy man ami- ably supervises fhe physical operafion of everyfhing wifhin fhe building which in- cludes fhe counselors, feachers, sfudenf body, cafeferia, and cusfodians. Manag- ing all afhlefic and dramafic evenfs fhroughouf fhe year is also a big iob for fhis cheerful man. Chief among his many dufies is seeing fhaf fhe curriculum is fhe besf possible for Moline's feenagers and mainfaining a safisfacfory feaching personnel. ln a friendly helpful way he works wifh bofh faculfy and sfudenfs, lending his advice in whafever way he can. School Adds Two Counselors For Each Class Assisfing fha principal in admin- isfrafive work, making ouf sfu- denf schedules, working wifh fhe counselors, and caring for fhe welfare of fha sfudenfs in fhe building are ihe main dufies of Mr. Norman Ziebell, assisfanf principal. This year marks fhe beginning of a new kincl of counseling sysiem ai MHS. Two counselors, a man and a woman, direcf each class. Each counselor has become acquainfed wifh siuclenfs in a personal way, which enables fhe sfu- clenf io feel free in Talking over his problem. ln aoldifion 'io counseling, 'rhey assisf sfudenfs wifh fheir programs, check on absences, and help in lanning class social funcfions. The senior counselors aid fhie class mem- bers in picking colleges and nofify ihem of fhe scholar- ships for which fhey are eligible. Each senior counselor also keeps informed abouf iob vacancies in The area fo assisi prospecfive graduaies in gefffing posifions. The junior and sophomore counselors help 'rhe underclassmen in seleciing The proper courses for 'rheir careers. Communicafions, a course in which grammar and compo- siiion are sfudied buf in which rhe reading is more general Than in rhe oiher courses, is also offered. Oral English is required of all juniors, one period weelcly being devoied 'ro giving individual speeches, panel discussions, and reporis. Alihough senior English is eleciive, college-bound sfudenrs generally enroll in English lireraiure, in which 'rhey siudy Shakespeare, Milfon, Slevenson, and Tennyson in addifion To many ofher popular auihors and poeis. Composiiion, a one-semesfer course, is a siudy of grammar and Theme wriring which prepares pupils for college rheroric. English confemporary is offered one semesrer for seniors. A one semesfer remedial reading course is offered +o srudenfs who wish fo improve rheir reading speed and comprehension. The library, consfanfly used by English srudenls, provides boolcs for boolc reporis and reference marerial for invesiiga- 'five papers. In 'rhe spring each English reacher submils lis'rs of books 'ro be ordered for depar+men+ needs. Demonsfrafing poise and self-confidence is Nancy Ross, a member of a junior oral English class, as she presenfs a well prepared speech io fhe class.
