As our class mates gather The last time this year, Let us pledge allegiance To a school so dear. Let us all be grateful For our friends galore, That We'll meet once more. God Bless Molalla High, School that We Love. Friends We're leaving And we're grieving, As tonight We will ask from above, That no matter Where we travel Or where ever we may roam, God Bless Molalla High And bring us home. JEAN SCHRIEVER STUART McKiNN1s CLASS POEM Since weyve entered Molalla High School As shy Freshmen years ago, And with awe regarded other Seniors While We wandered to and fro, We've had fun and Work and worries While the years sped swiftly past And we've reached the goal we sought then We are now the Senior Class. The years We've spent in Molalla High Pass before us in brief parade The lessons we learned, the dreaded exams The mistakes we so often made. The plays we've presentd, the sports we took part in The triumphs and honors we'x'e won ln spite of all the work and study lt has been a lot of fun. Soon we Will leave these halls of learning And we'll say a fond goodliy To familiar scenes and classmates And the teachers who've stood by, May the lessons We have learned here Friendships formed and memories dear Give us courage, hope and cheer. Vineigsm RUssELL STORY OF THE MOLALLAS .ln the long ago there was civil strife among the Cayuses. and after bitter fighting a band of seceders, with their families and possessions, took the way westward, from the bunch grass region of the Upper Columbia, prospecting for a new home. They found all the territory east of the Cascade Mountains occupied by warlike tribes that would stand no interference, but allowed them to pass on and enter the Cascade Range on their way westward. So they left the fierce XVascos, the fiercer Warm Springs, and the Teninos, for the promised land they had heard of as the VVah-lam-ut. The Western tribes showed them a trail that led across the Cascades and the seceding Cayuses followed it one summer time until they found themselves in the beautiful Vtfah-lam-ut Valley. But they found this valley inhabited by the Calipooias. These Cayuses were hunters, and the Cascades were then full of game of all kinds. So this heroic band made a treaty of eternal peace with the Calipooias that never was violated. and peaceably occupied the mountain foothills region where they found game in plenty and all sorts of berries and roots to supply their needs. Thus they had pleasant homes and grew and prospered until they occupied all the mountain sides that bordered the VVah-lam-ut Valley. They were Cayuses no longer, but took the name of Molallas. These Indians lived and died with terrible vengeance in their hearts toward their Cayuse relatives, who had driven them into the wilderness. They transmitted this hate to their descendants. Une day they sent a challenge to the Cayuses to come and fight it out. The challenge was accepted. There was a fierce fight but the Cayuses went home in triumph. Many years later there was another battle. but again the Molallas were defeated. However this time there were so few fighting men left. that they. as a nation, never could afford to again take the war-path. 1n 1849 it was estimated to number 100. About 1880 several families were living at Grande Ronde and about 20 individuals were found west of Klamath Lake. The last chief of the Molalla tribe, Henry Yelkis, had his home on the Molalla river and died in 1913. His son. Henry Yelkis, is the only known remaining Molalla Indian. The town of Molalla took its name from the Molalla river. which was named after the Molalla Indians. In Their Country's Service l l, at -. . l Carl Deriler Errol 0'Gieblyn ADMINISTRAT A W V, X. Canby May 17 ............... Canby ....... ........... M olalla fKings X Gamej April 23 Silverton-M olalla TRACK Beginning the season with seven returning lettermen, Rick Marquardt, Bill Kraxberger, Ray Zielinski, Darrell VValke1', Howard Smith, jim Marquardt, and Don Miller plus a large turnout ot new and promising material makes this year's track team shape up into one of the major groups of the school. Three of the returning lettermen hold track records in the Mile Run, the 880 yard dash, and the high jump. These three winners together with several other point gatherers constif tute the atom around which an exceedingly well-balanced squad is centered. Overwhelmingly superior, Coach VVilson's Indians swamped all opposition in a tri-meet with West Linn and VVoodburn April 4th and marched off with a total of SISM4 points to VVoodburns' 34M and NVest Linns' 34. Ray Zielinski, Qweight manj tallied a total of 10 points for high score and was flanked by Johnny VVells. speedy ex-Canby sprinter, and Howard Smith, record-holding high-jump artist. Commendable was Bill Kraxbergens record-breaking 880 yard dash in which he outdistanced his competitor and shattered a school record which had stood for several years. To be resumed this season after a lapse of 3 years, the annual Molalla Pentath- lon will offer an opportunity for winged-foot Mercurys to display their skills for a number of attractive trophies and medals. Also predominant on this year's scheduleiwill be the Hayward Relays in which the Molalla Indians will vie with surrounding schools for the much-envied Hayward Trophy. One more Winning of the coveted prize will entitle Molalla to its permanent possession.
