MARYJ MIDDLETON A CAMPUS SYMPHONY: THE STORY OF OUR THEME By +he Edilors and Siaff There are many fhemes fhaf appear over and over in college yearbooks. Many are in+eres+ing, buf 'rhe facf +ha+ +hey are used again and again made us unhappy aboul' fhem. Surely, we +hough+, fhere musl be somefhing new 'l'o say. We noficed, loo, fhai' 'l'hese ihemes are used in much lhe same way by schools of differeni' size, in diFFeren+ par+s of fhe coun+ry, and wi+h differeni' siudenl' groups. They are like some of 'rhe sfock illusfrarions +ha+ prinfers can provide, a gofhic doorway or an oil burning lamp. When fhe Buccaneer sfaff of l954 had finished Hs work, some of us who infended +o refurn and work on fhe yearbook for I955 began +o 'lhink abouf fhe problem of a fheme fhaf would express our 'Feelings ioward Modesfo Junior College. We asked ourselves iwo ques'I'ions: Whaf does college mean 'ro us and whal' is special aboul' our own junior college? We found, afier long discussion, +ha'l' fhe answer would noi be a simple one. I+ would have +o convey many ideas and feelings. Our ediior-eleci, Barbara Allinson, suggesfed fha? our years in Modesro Junior College could be symbolized by a symphony, a campus symphony. Bur fhere was foo much fo be crowded info four or 'Five symphony movemenfs, we said, and so she proposed seven, fhe seven paris of fhis book. We found, +oo, fha? each par? of fhe book held more fhan one idea and mood, so we chose 'For ifs symbol one o'F1'he greai' and varied symphonies of Haydn or Beefhoven or Mendelssohn. Our campus sym- phony fhus 'look form, and fhis is ifs firsf, perhaps ifs only performance.
