19 BARTONIAN 24 Five field goals were the returns of the Barton forwards in the first quarter while the McGillians were only able to cage one goal. Only one field goal w as caged by Barton during the second quarter and McG1lls dropped rn two giving our team a 12 6 decision at the half way mark The second quarter dragged hx without many thrills except when Petzey Perez would double through hrs former teammates and cage a field goal or two the final score ending 20 11 Although being cheered by Pensacola fans for our clean playing we dropped the game with the Pensacola High School on February 24 by a score of 18 13 Pet re Perea actually was cheered more than any other play er on the floor for the fast clean and exciting game he played Pensacolas defense was too much for us We were forced to shoot from the mrddle of the floor and oftrmes these w ere blocked The frye man defense w as display ed rn great style and each Pensacola play er play ed a good game Perez would skirt through the Pensacola defense and would often shoot a goal from the middle of the floor Taylor al o play ed a good game for us FEBRUARY 29 Our quintet Journey ed to Bay Mrnette on February 22 and gavf the team of that place a 19 16 w alloprng The game played on an outdoor court was exceedingly rough at times but the spectators were kept on their toes from the first blast of the whistle Bas Mrnette held a two point lead at the end of the first half the score being 14 12 Rough tactics on the part of both teams made the contest resemble a football game more than a cage battle Pretty work on the part of the Barton forward cut down this lead and at the end of the third quarter the score was 17 15 rn our favor Close guarding kept down scoring on both teams but Perez w as able to cage a field goal while Bay Mrnette only rang a foul goal Barton Barton Barton Barton Barton Barton Barton Barton Barton Barton SCORES Laurel Bax Mrnette Biloxi 'VlcG1ll s Wright s Spring Hill NIcG1ll s Lanier Spring Hill NIcG1ll s 164 Y LY K a tv , s Uv A , K , y . , - K . , . v ,' . -' S, ci J' . . . t ' . 19 BARTONIA Grrls Basket Ball Season Thrs year when the grrls started to practice basketball they were not confronted by the drsadyantage of not havrng experlenced players as was the case rn preyrous years The players from the precedrng yea: were Capta1n Vera Haverman Frances Grayson Dana Dayrs and sev eral grrls yy ho had play ed on the second team The Armory wa the place decrded on for practlce as rt had been frxed up the year before Mrss Unruh coach and Claude Scheffelrn assrstant coach trred to develop a speedy team and they succeeded Farrhope was Bartons frrst opponent and rn thrs game Barton came out the wrnner as the frnal score was 22 16 At the end of the frrst half the score tood 9 8 rn Barton s favor but durrng the second half Barton speeded up and ended wrth a srx pornt lead The game was played on the Farrhope court and was the frrst trrp of the season The second game was wrth the Kats a local team Thrs game had a four pornt drffer ence but rn favor of the Kats The game was very excrtrng but as the Barton grrls were verv much outwerghed they lost 16 11 Thrs game showed that they could lose gamely frghtrng to the end The second trrp of the season was made to Ieakesvrlle Mrss The grrls travelled all Saturday rnornrng arrrved at Leakesvrlle at 12 30 and played at 1 00 The game was played on an out door three drvrsron court and vw as won by Leakesvrlle 22 7 The next Saturday the Leakesyrlle grrls came to Mob1le and got the surprrse of therr lry es The Barton grrls trrmmed the V1 rtrng ag gregatron by a score of 23 16 The game was very close untrl the end when Barton made a strong frnrsh Before a large crowd a tthe Y M C A the Kats played Barton agarn Another game frght was staged by our grrls but thev were defeated agarn 22 18 Barton showed her speed and her pass work but to no avarl as the Kats howed therr werght The Reds team was the next one tackled by Barton Thrs was the most excrtrng game of the season so far The score zlg zagged back and forth and ended 23 22 Barton Grayson got away from her guards and Dayrs and Stollenyy erck drd all the passrng necessarv to get the ball to her Captarn Haverman dld some trght guardrng The St Joan of Arc gli, came down to the Armory to take a game from us and almost succeeded the frnal score berng 11 9 Bar ton The St Joan of Arc grrls played fast and hard but could not keep Grayson from shootrng enough pornts to wrn the game whrle Capta1n Haverman held doyyn the enemy forwards Farrhope was not satrsfled wrth her frrst defeat but came oy er to Mob1le to ey en up matters The game was play ed at the Y M C A and Farrhope was confrdent of yyrnnrng After a few mlnutes of play N 24 O l 1 y .1 1 , '1 9 ' K 9 , 1 .1 .
