Rcvelatlons On Fr1day the 13th of March lt was late As I was wendmg my homeward way I heard the soft hoot of an owl and followlng an lmpulse rather than the sound my soul possessed wxth strange fancles I became aware that I was no longer surrounded by the haunts of the l1v1ng I reahzed that monuments of grey stone and vaults of cold marble were on all S1d6S that the streets were silent that no sound was heard save the soft sound of the crlcket the low slgh of the w1nd as It breathed through the bendmg wlllows and I reallzed that I was m the clty of the dead I sat me down upon a low stone to rest for I was weary I bent my head uoon my hands and gave myself up to medltatlon when out of th sllence of the mght there came a low soft VOICE whlch seemed to penetrate my senses rather than my ears I lsten 0 foollsh son of mortal man thmk not that wxsdom comes from studles among the hvmg What can mere man do? Thmkest thou that all thy fond ambxtlons and foolish hopes can come to pass? Llsten to what I have to tell you I am not of flesh and blood yet I have once been a poor weak creature as thou art I see all thmgs ln the future as lf they were ln the past In deep sepulchral tones came these words Follow me and when I had walked through space unendlng we came to an open grave As feet there opened a door Enter was the word that came from my gulde and wlth no questlon upon my hps wlth eyes blmded to mortal thmgs w1th ears closed to earthly sounds I went down down to where the unforgotten records of unnum bered deeds are stored m caverns whxch st1ll have room and yawn for more Then again that voxce Follow me I wlll show you the records of thmgs that are to come and placmg a parchment m my trembhng hand and dlppmg a pen ln the blood of murdered men he commanded me to ob serve carefully And as I looked behold' the scroll unfolded before me and mstead of reading I saw as ln a v1s1on events as they had happened for I dxscovered that I was m the caverns of the future Out of a cloud of smoky mlst I saw a flgure rlsmg upon a plnnacle of fame gestlculatlng wlldly tearmg h1s long and matted haxr Hls clothes hung eloquent but p1t1ful ln tremors about h1s at tenuated body I hstened to catch the golden words which fell upon the sllver sllence of the enraptured multltude and to my ears came famtly these sad and solemn words Rlght thls way ladles and gentlemen here s the only place to get the flrst and orlglnal Groves Chill Tonlc-ac cept no substltute Endorsed by all the leadmg members of the press and pulpxt ' And then, and not untll then dld I recogmze the sweet and samtly expressxon of my dear old chum, Ed Grove The v1s1on passed when suddenly I saw sus pended between the blue of the ether and the tawny earth a flgure too thm for mortal man yet strangely materlahstxc I said Methmks I have seen that form and flgure before Yes no Am I ln Toxey cated? No With subhme and mcom parable grace It IS Walter flxlllg a telephone wxre As I looked he fell leavmg me uncertam as to what mxght have been h1s doom Suddenly there appeared before my v1ew a flgure wlth rlbbons wavmg from h1s shoulders wxth medals on h1s breast wxth brows covered wlth laurels Maldens faxr and beautiful to see were strewmg flowers ln h1s path some were klsslng h1s hands From the multltude whlch sur rounded h1m I could easlly dlscern many eager to Gam recogmtxon from his eagle eye I Sald B hold the conquermg hero comes All men pay hlm homage I stramed my ears to catch what words mlght fall from h1s hps but no sound I looked as he slowly turned h1s classmc face toward me and I dlscovered another of my comrades and ques tloned to know his achlevements and found that he had not used the senate as a steppmg stone to h1s eminence nor yet from the pulpxt had he won renown Then surely he must have been a pleader for the cause of men or a Jurlst admxmsterlng Jus- txce No What then? A popular baseball hero Rhett McBride Then amid tumultuous shouts and wavmg of flags they passed on As they passed along I notlced ln the crowd another fa mxlxar fxgure That well remembered face wlth that courageous smxle I understand but the cos tume IS at varlance wlth my recollectlon and his comrade how strange' goes perched upon his arm What IS that under h1s other arm A camera' No A surveyor s mstrument? No And as he hfts It around and grasps the handle the strams of a band wagon greet my ears Can thls be Worthmgtonf The scene changed I hear the low hummmg of the bees ln the hxve the sweet warblmg of the mating birds the r1pplmg of a brook On all sxdes sweet nature greets me Back to the prxme- val haunts Arcadla-a woodland path bendmg branches and upon a h1ll a llttle old log school house about whlch the poets wrlte I am xm pressed that I have come upon a seat of learnmg and I see mscrlbed upon the door Garrlsoman Instltute Male and Female Lee Garrlson ln charge of males Clem Wetherbee nn charge of fe males TLIIIZIOII 50 cents per month ln advance or S1 on tlme Potatoes and old clothes taken m ex change Motto Spare the rod and spoxl the ch1ld.'
