Hlstory of The Class ol 08 Boys The autumn of 1904 IS a memorable one mn the chromcles of O'd Barton for a partlcular 1ea son the a1r1val of the class of 1908 We came here xvxth llttle knowledge of the dlffxculues to be overcome ln pursumg a hxgh school course at Bar ton Academy We numbered flfty But alas' at the end of the second year only twenty four re mamed Some xx e1e unequal to the task of cllmb mg the h1ll of learnmg whlle others stopped to take a part ln the mad whlrl of busmess hfe In passmg from the second to the thlrd class under the laws of ex 0llllZ10l'1 that prex all at the Academy survn al of the flttest and those that do not pass must stay behlnd -our class les sened 1n number s fxom twenty four to fou1teen Ou1 memor1es may be trusted to preserve the hlstory of tl e many mlnor lHCld6I'ltS and adven tures that befell us All remember V1Vldly the horlors of the s1e e of Port Arthur Thls has no reference to the Pusso Japanese war but to a cer tam lecess xn the xx all m xvhlch a number of us would defend our elves agalnst the attacks of wxth the hald stone walls None will forget the tune when the whole thlrd and fourth year classes came around to show us a few thlngs However they came saw and were defeated 1907 08' We are here at last that goal for whlch we have strwen so hald When we entered the splendxd old blllldlllg at the openlng of thls school term we al o entered under the guldance of of a nexx prlncmal Prof R A Mlckle Prof T A Taylor ou1 former pl'll1ClDal and a man Whom we aomned for hxs oualxtles had afflllated h1m self x 1th the Mobxle Mllltafy Instltute Prof Mxckle has put mto operatlon a number of modern and nox el plans And thls class has been much honored by holdmg h1s 1mpl1c1t confl dence Many of these plans at flrst seemed to us to be chlmerlcal But time has proven otherwlse One of these IS the plan of self government The xvl-ole Hum School IS governed after the plan of a vnunlclpahty Warrants are sworn out for of fenders and punlshment admmlstered by Judges who are members of the Hlgh School Another plan IS the one that leax es the class on 1ts honor Thls makes lt unnecessary for a teacher to be ln the room durlng the study hours From almost the fust of the school te1m the members of the Hlgh School have edlted a xx hole page 1n the mormng paper every Monday The page xvas al ways nexvsy and brlght and acted as a medlum to show the great progress sweeplng through Ba1 ton The members of thls class have bolne the brunt of a large part of the undertaklng and lf there was anythlng IH It during the year that was ln a small xyay notewolthy It IS probable that lt can be traced to some member of thxs class Barton thls year possessed an unusually f1ne C01pS of teachers each and every one of whose effolts and servxces w1ll always be cherlshed by the class and lt 1S not to be wondered at that the fond memory of these wlll ey er be a pleasant recol lectlon to the boys Our k1nd Superlntendent Mr S S Murphy has been more than generous ln puylleges that he has granted to the boys for all prmclpal the pen can hardly reproduce thoughts that express our feellngs toward h1m Nex er was thele a teacher more beloved and adm1red than Prof Mlckle for hls strong lntellectuallty hlgh culture h1s ldeahsm h1s enthuslasm and above all hls smcerlty But the brlghtest sunshlne must mevltably become the darkest of nlght We numberlng twelve who for many long years have been to gether we who have overcome the same tasks engoyed the same pleasules must prepare to part The memory of our frlendshlps can never perlsh We can however rest assured that m the dlm fu ture when surlounded by the worrxes of our fu ture careers we w1ll hear the names of those who as they cllmb from stone to stone toward the Zenlth of fame w1ll recall to us pleasantest recol lectlons of our Hmh School days To our Alma Matel teachers and class mates we add Farewell' a word that must be and hath been A sound that makes us llnger yet farewell' MENDEL P GOLDSTEIN Hlstorxan of Class of 08 . 1 1 -Y . .
