XX Xl l .1 lx X1 I INILHULS Mmn, r Athlctlcs Upon takmg a retrospectxve vxew for a year mto the hlstory of Barton Academy It can be sald that athletlcs has been very successful Although not vlctorlous IH all games played there has been a f1ne sp1r1t manlfested at all tlmes and m no ln stance has the Academy had reason to be ashamed of the vallant warrlors who fought for the Blue and Gold At the beglnnmg of the year 1906 07 an Athletlc Assoclatlon was orgamzed 1n the school wlth Bruce McGehee as presldent Although a good record was made that year ln athletlcs noth mg was accomnhshed 1n the way of a permanent athletlc assoclatlon At the begmnmg of the next year reallzmg that wlthout a well organlzed ath letlc assocxatlon to support the teams flnanclally and enthuslastlcally as well as managlng them athletlcs would always be a dead letter the Hlgh School formed an Athletic Assoclatlon adopted a constltutlon and elected offlcers Over one half of the Hlgh School Jolned show1ng at once the1r loy alty and the1r wrlhngness to support In addltlon a few were admltted from the Grammar Grades by a vote of the Assoclatxon th1s bemg the manner m whlch boys from thls department may become members of the Assoclatlon Mr George Wallace was elected presldent of the Assoclatlon and by hls lnterest has done much to advance athletlcs 1n th1s capaclty as well as on the fleld The Academy appreclates hxs unselflsh efforts and hrs 9fflCl6Ht SGYVICQS A word should be sald Just here concermng the Barton Academy Store whlch we conslder as a w1se plece of statesmanshlp for wlth lxttle trouble lt has developed 1nto a well governed and profltable busmess It has been a blessmg to the school ln many ways and has always stood ready to help every worthy undertaklng on the part of the school W1thout 1tS help athletlcs may have came out beh1nd fmanclally At any rate lt has reheved the student body of a great stram The Academy took part the past year ln foot ball basket ball and baseball Clem Wetherbee was our foot ball captaln and he turned out a team of whlch the Academy mmght boast In the flrst game all the players showed a lack of expe rlence and tralmng bemg overwhelmmgly de feated yet w1th surprlsmg xmprovement every player showed grlt and got together a team whlch never lost a game the rest of the season To crown a season s success the Academy won over the strong Thomasvllle eleven by a score of 13 o Basket ball and baseball under the leadershxp of Walter Toxey and Rhett McBr1de showed clear ly the p0SSlbllltlGS whlch the Academy possesses ln these two phases of athletmcs As a whole the past year has been a declded step toward a greater day for athletlcs The graduates hope to see an other year of great efforts ln all sports The school store has purchased unlforms for foot ball basket ball baseball and track teams secured equlpment for those teams made good all d9flC1tS mcurred by brmgmg out of town teams to Moblle mstalled a system of hot water baths of whlch the school IS Justly proud and ln a thou sand ways has made DOSS1blB the accomphshment of what would have otherwlse been lmp0SSlblG The Hlgh School 1S a member of the Inter Scholastxc Baseball League and Whlle hghter ln welght and on the average much younger than the1r antagomsts yet the boys have done well and have played good ball and by the1r flne deport ment and true sportsmanshlp have made many In track work the boys have been the ploneers as far as the prep schools of the clty are concerned and the showlng made at Brewton ln the recent orator1cal and athletlc contests wlth the Brewton and Pensacola Hlgh Schools was very gratlfylng In the hlgh and broad Jump pole vaultmg hurd hng puttmg the hammer and shot etc the boys have done very well mdeed In the great May Festlval the Athletlc As soclatxon took part ln novelty and obstacle races hand and basket ball etc the medal on that oc caslon for the best player bemg won by Eddle Grove A handsome bronze medal for havmg accom pllshed most 1n athletlcs durlng the past year was on that occaslon awarded to T D Nettles Jr of the fxrst grade Hxgh School It 1S 1mposs1ble for the boys to express the1r mdebtedness and appreclatlon to Mr George Wal lace for what he has done for them m these lmes Mr Wallace 1S hlmself one of the best ath letes ln the country excellmg 1n foot ball basket ball track work baseball tenms etc Ungrudg mgly has he worked for the boys and they ad mlre and have confidence ln h1m . The former chalrman reslgned and Grace A Glll was elected lh her place At the last electlon Laurle Reasonover was awarded the presldentlal honors, whlch we are assured she wxll we xr well The former vxce presldent secre tary and treasurer refused nom1nat1on and Lucxlle Zelnlcker Edlth Scott and Kate McCall w1ll fxll thexr places Melulle Tucker who has been on the Program Commlttee the flrst two terms was at th1s meetmg elected chairman At thls meetmg also It was dec1ded to create a new offlce that of cr1t1c The dutles are to be Cr1t1c1sm of every thlng not accordlng to the rules and regulatxons of the club Grace A Glll was elected to thxs offlce Besldes thls lnterestlng meetmg there have been many others fraught w1th the hlghest mtex est Among these were the programs on Moblle and on School Days At the flrst Mrs E S Colston qulte charmed those assembled wlth her fascmatmg remlmscences of Moblle as it was befoh de wah The program on School Days was also cleverly carried out and was of great 1nterest to us as two of the themes related the adyentures of a Barton Xcademy glrl 1n school and after leavlng school At many of these club gathermgs the boys have been present and they ln turn have l1'lVlt9d the Soclety to thelr clubs At one of our last meetmgs lt was dec1ded to have an lnter club contest to be partlcxpated ln by the A B L S the Nautllus the Eumenean and the Phllosophlc Clubs What form the con test w1ll take has not yet been dec1ded but It IS generally beheved that lt w1ll be an oratorxcal contest It has also been proposed to hare the presldents of the mrls clubs Laurie Reasonover and Ruth de Grange engage ln a debate The1r opponents w1ll be chosen from any of the four clubs 1n the Academy The outcome IS looked for ward to w1th much 1nterest Then another enjoyable feature of the latter part of the year was the llttle plav entltled In the Teeth of the Glft Horse Thls took place at the former presldent s home on the Frlday mght followmg Easter The actresses were Mel v1lle Tucker Lucllle Zelmcker Freda G Bose and Kate Nlcol The two men s parts were taken by Vlvlan Walker and Santa Cruz At thlS entertam ment were bldden all the members of the A B L S the members of the boys clubs and also the glrls of the Thlrd and Fourth Classes who were ehglble for membershm but who had not Jomed Thls llttle affalr was pronounced by all to be ultra charmxng The boys and gxrls who acted acqultted themselves m a most creditable manner Hlstrlomc futures of great success were prophe sled for the amateurs In other words they made a hlt so of course It was a huge sue cess Many of the glrls who m the begmmng would not belong to the club are now comlng eagerly forward and enrollmg then' names.
