MRS. JANE DENTON, SHIPS SPONSOR MOBILE B»t ■ v ' »« - The Captain discusses ' MOBILE ' S CRUISER . with Senator and Mrs. Denton prior to the ship ' s October 1985 christen- ing. I christen thee MOBILE BAY Proud Patriots at Christening Sponsors have been associated with ships for many centuries. According to tradition, the spirit of the sponsor enters the ship forever during the Christening Ceremony. MOBILE BA Y is especially proud to be sponsored by Mrs. Jane Maury Denton, an ardent patriot, native Mobilian. and dedicated Navy wife of 31 years. Married to former Navy Rear Admiral and former U.S. Senator (R — Alabama) Jeremiah Denton, Jane broke the traditional champagne on the bow in October 1985 to give MOBILE BAY her name and. in the process, became our Ship ' s Mom . The parents of five sons and two daughters, the Dentons were major participants in the Commissioning Ceremonies wherein Rear Admiral Denton delivered the principal address and read the Commissioning Directive. Jane, meanwhile, presented a forged plaque commemorating the Battle of the Bay which will be displayed on the Quarter- deck for the life of the ship. The Den- tons reside in the Mobile area where they are very active in community and civic affairs. They are truly MOBILE BAYS first family . Mrs. Jane Maury Denton Jane, you just launched a missile into Pascagoula! Right: Hey. It Fits!
