CAPTAIN F.R. WHALEN COMMANDING OFFICER Four — oh is as low as Ufe go! Anyone on the team speak German ? Captain Whalen. the son of a career naval officer, was born in Honolulu. Hawaii, attended high school in Norfolk, Virginia, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1963. He has served in seven combatants including, prior to MOBILE BA Y, as Commanding Officer of USS THOMAS C. HART, an Atlantic Fleet fast frigate, from 1981-83. Deployments have included five to the Mediterranean, three to South and Central America, and one to the Persian Gulf. Ashore. Captain Whalen has been assigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington and to the United States Naval Academy on two occasions, most recently from 1983 to 1985 as the Director of Professional Development. He is a distinguished graduate of Naval Destroyer School in Newport. Rhode Island and the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. He holds a Master ' s Degree in Business from the George Washington University. On the personal side. Captain Whalen has been actively involved as a youth soccer coach at all levels in several states. Most recently, he served as Officer-ln-Charge of the Naval Academy Soccer Program from 1983 to 1985 and as a Junior Olympic coach for the State of Mississippi during MOBILE BAYS precommissioning period. He is also a practicing artist, specializing in the maritime field, with his work periodically featured as covers of professional magazines. His portrait of MOBILE BA Y is permanently displayed in the Mobile Museum as a Commissioning gift to the city. Captain Whalen. his wife Marti, and sons Scott.
