Haifa, 25-28 July 96 Located in the southeastern portion of the Med, Haifa was MITSCHER ' s second port of call. MITSCHER was origi- nally scheduled to be here later in the cruise but received tasking calling her to the eastern Med much earlier than antici- pated. Showing her flexibility and capa- bilities MITSCHER arrived 25 July 1996. Many tours were available for crewmembers to partake in. This includ- ed tours to Jerusalem, Bethlahem and the Dead Sea. Taking advantage of this once in a lifetime chance to visit the Holy Land is only a dream for most. For MIT- SCHERmen, there were memories to be savored for a lifetime. Prices in Israel were fair and good buys were to be had at the diamond factories. Many Christmas gifts were purchased at the factories with hard earned dollars converted to shekels. The food was good and the night life was about average. The tours available played a big role in our final grade for this port, an 8.

na, Spain 1 2- 1 8 July 96 Iocated on the northeastern coast of - Spain, Barcelona w as the first port call for MITSCHER ' s Med Cruise. Many crewmembers, having never been out- side the United States, took their first step onto foreign soil. Eyes were wide and expectations were running high. Not to their disappointment, Barcelona turned out to be an excellent port, with many sites to see and a better than average night life. The beach was only a few hundred yards away from the pier. Prices were reasonable, and most people spoke english. We had the basketball goal set up on the pier for those who did not want to strav too far from the ship. Taking all of this into account and con- sidering we had beautiful weather for the enhre visit, the MITSCHER crew gave Barcelona a rating of 9 out of 10 possible. = g a 39 a air xa a =i ■ °° ' 1 1 1 1 II mil

Greece -5 August 96 Seated just outside of the entrance to the Adriatic Sea, the island of Ker- kira, greece (known to Americans as Cor- fu) was the host to MITSCHER ' s third port visit. The only way to describe Corfu is sim- ply-Beautiful- in every sense of the word. A beautiful island, beautiful weather, beautiful water and last, but not least, beautiful women. This was definitely an excellent port for the night owls , as most of the clubs did not open until well after midnight. There were also many interesting sights to be seen. The attractions ranged from Greek architecture to legendary sta- tues of gods and goddesses and breath taking views from the tops of the local hills. The food and drink were excellent, pri- ces were fair and the people were friend- ly. Overall rating for this port was a 9.
