MITSCHER - THE MAN Marc Andrew MITSCHER was born on January 26, 1887 in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. He entered the Naval Academy in 1906: progressing to the grade of Admiral in September, 1946. Designated as Naval Aviator No. 33 in 1916, he participated in catapult experiments aboard the USS HUNTINGTON in 1917. and served as an aviator for 2 years aboard USS SARATOGA the first ship launched as an aircraft carrier. MITSCHER gained fame as Commanding Officer of the USS HORNET when that ship carried General J. A. DOOLITTLE's raiders to within striking distance of Tokyo in 1942. In March 1944, he assumed command of Task Force 58. At the close of the first battle of the Philippine Sea, TF 58 aircraft were returning from an airstrike, dangerously low on fuel. Weighing the dangers of lurking Japanese submarines against the plight of his own pilots, Admiral MITSCHER issued his now famous order to his darkened ships, Turn on the lights! In July, 1945, he became Deputy CNO for Air. He served as Commander, EIGHTH FLEET until assuming command of U.S. Atlantic Fleet in September 1946. He served in this post until his death in 1947.
