-rim wilhlf follows is the story, in pictures, of MI'l'SCjlllilI's deployment to the Mt-tiiterrnnettn from lanuary to june, 1973. The story, like most good yarns, is composed of equal portions of humor, drama, fun, boredom, excitement and frustmtion. lt is the story of a ship and her crew, a story as old as civilization and as young as today. MlTSCillER's cruise was unique in several ways. We spent the majority of our time at sea Qabout 60927 and were one of the very few ships in the SIXTH b'l.Eli'I' to do so. We traveled to the Black Sea and visited a port there, again an uncommon occurance. And we made eight lengthwise transits of the Mediterranean, which must have set some sort of record. With all of this time at sea, MITSCHI-QR was involvednin many interesting operations. We observed the operations of the Soviet Navy, which has grown in ' in recent years to rival our own in the Med. During National Week XV, we SIZE ' o erated with the entire SIXTH FLEET as well as ships of our NATO allies. In P DAWN PATROL we enjoyed a four day air show while towing a bombing target for planes from the U.S. Navy and the British, Greek and Italian Air Forces. ' f oulcl have We saw some interesting ports too, although not as many as we w liked. In Spain, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, Italy and France MITSCHER men, . . . d cameras in hand, enjoyed the sights and sounds of widely different cultures an societies. But all of our experiences and all that MITSCHER and her crew accomplished SFHFR Vxed u to her add u to one thing - doing our job. In the Med in 1973 MIT .,. e .1 f p P motto - Par Excellence. Over 30,000 miles of ocean and 150 days in time, ll f hcr core nitments with style NIITSCIIHR met a o ' .1 .. . As I write the Chesapeake Bay light is almost visible and the end of another chapter in the life of the MITSCHER and of each MITSCIIERMAN is at hand. It W roud to have done our job well. And we are glad to was a good cruise. e are p be home. XZXVM
