CERAMICS DEPARTMENT I-IAS NEAR RECORD ENROLLMENT Laboratory projects give students valuable experience. Ceramic Engineering is concerned with the forma- tion of products from non-metallic earthy mate- rials by thermal changes. Options include refrac- tories, glasses, abrasives, whitewares, enameled wares, structural clay products, cements, limes, and plaster. During the past year, the Ceramic Engineering Department had a near record en- rollment. Graduate students numbered 14 includ- ing IO Ph.D. candidates, while undergraduate en- rollment was up a substantial percentage over the previous year. The vast majority of the under- graduates' training is handled by teachers holding Ph.D. degrees. A number of new scholarships and fellowships were added by industries intent on at- tracting top students to this rapidly growing field. Approximately thirty-five thousand dollars worth of new instructional and research equipment was acquired to offer students training and experience with the latest tools and methods.
