Home. After being half Way around the world, being away fOr SiX months and being in a war-- NliShfY Mo was Finally home. A Hollywood script couldnt have been written better for the 1500 crewmembers and the th0uSaHdS who came to see the victorious re- tum of USS Missouri on May 13. 1991. As the ship came through Queens Gate and headed for home, thc familiar sight of welcome home well-wishcrs could he seen on the mole pier. beginning Missoun's ofli- clal homecoming. Slowly, under cloudy skies, the mighty dreadnought slipped around the bend and headed for Battleship Country, Pier 6 at the Long lieaeh Naval Station in dramatic fashion. With an eseort ot' tire boats ln front and a parade ol' small boats behind, the sun hroke through the elouds, illuminating a ship and erew ln a brilliance ol' pride and reliel' that eoultl he seen on the laees ofthe erew as lt moved elo:-aer to honie. 'l'he sun also illuminated the thousauds ol' loved ones who erummed the pier and eraned their neeks looking lor their sailor. With balloons. llowers and sign:-1 in hand. Mlssourts liunily and friends anx- lously waited lor t he ship to be moored and the erew to he dismissed into the arms ofthe waiting erowd. As the brows were put into plaee, a roar ol' gratitude and relief grew in speed and volume from the throng. until the erew and erowd eame together in one gigantic' hug ol' love. On November 13. 1990. a -16-year-old battleship with more than 1500 men. most no older than 20. left lor mir. Six months later, after being llilll-ll'XN'0I'ltl axxuy and spend- ing two-and-a-hall' months in com- bat. that same ship retumed-- victo- rious. relieved. sale and proud.
