THE SURRE DER RDINARILY, on each four hour watch, the officer of the deck on a U.S. Naval ship records a staid, brief, ofhcial summary of events known as the deck log, that averages a couple hundred Words of routine facts and statistics. One morn- ing early in September, 1945, the log of the 8-12 watch on the U.S.S. Missouri didn't follow this pattern: the 834 word record with 91 names of generals and admirals from 10 different countries, recorded an event which never before had taken place on any ship- the signing of the surrender of an empire. At five minutes after eight the Missouri lay peacfully anchored in Tokyo Bay with tiny white caps tapping gently at her hard steel sides, when the destroyer U.S.S. Buchanan came alongside to deliver the first of the prominent members in the scene to be enacted: Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Exactly 33 minutes 1ater another destroyer, the U.S.S. Nicholas, came alongside to disembark a tieless, solemn looking Douglas MacArthur, under his famous Weather-beaten hat. Personal flags of General MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz were broken at the mainmast. After a brief conference in Admiral Halseyls cabin, and when all the parties were present, General MacArthur gave a short speech in a soft, even voice and the ceremony commenced. ln the short span of 23 minutes, all persons concerned had signed and the proceedings were history. The notables left with as little fanfare as when they arrived and the second World War was brought to a close. 20
