“When we were kids, going back to school on that cool first day, there was a special smell of halls cleaned with Pine-Sol, clean notebooks and stiff books. But not for us anymore. We go back to school in the sweltering heat and unbearable humidity. Our freshman year it took the entire family, the wagon loaded and seven hours to move in. Now it takes us about 30 minutes. We ' ve got this system down pat. You ' ve been away all summer and you ' ve got to have a Walmart fix. There is nothing so thrilling as to walk into that treasure trove of retail. Everything is so cheap and so useful that you ' ve got to have it. You spend $60 easy. No wonder Mr. Walton is the richest guy in America. We come to school tan and smiling and rushing those freshmen. Talking, " Do you know . . . " Then serious talk but always smiling. In Lisa Birnbach ' s college book she cites Ole Miss as a happy place and " who needs a happy hour in happy town. " It ' s true, it ' s a friendly place. Ole Miss, where everyone speaks, (and has a faculty parking sticker). ”
