OPPOSITE PAGE-TOP PANEL: The catch that broke the Parrots back in the play-offs came when Leroy Thomas snared a pass from Marv Odegard and legged the remaining distance to the goal line. First Grid Crown Frustroting Years SACRED HEART-OCTOBER 9 BEARS MASSACRE IRISH-41-6 Xlission showed considerable improvement over the season's opener in downing' Sacred Heart, -ll-li. It was in this game that the Iilston crew showed signs ol' making the playolls. ST. IGNATIUS-OCT 14 BEARS TAME WILDCATS-7-0 'I'he St. Ignatius game was strictly a delensive battle. Mission was able to score only seven points, but that was seven more than the 'Cats tallied. lt was in this game that Frank ii'att, unheralded tackle belore the season began, dehnitely showed he was a leading candidate for All-City honors. POLYTECHNIC-OCT 21 PARROTS FLY OVER BEARS--19-13 In the Poly game the Bears eameflose to beat- ing the Parrots but lost, I9-I3. Poly jumped to a I3-0 lead, but 1Qlston's crew fought back to tie the score in the hnal quarter. Only a last minute drive by Coach Milt Axt's crew enabled the Parrots to come out on top. After the game, Axt went on record as saying Mission was dehnitely the team to beat. LOWELL-OCT 29 BEARS SCALP INDIANS-32-19 Mission made Axt's remark seem all the more true when it scored 20 points in the first quarter and then went on to whip a strong Lowell team, 32-19, in its next outing. It was in this game that Maurice Frazier broke loose for a 64-yard run on the first play. WASHINGTON-NOV..3 EAGLES CLAW BEARS-0-7 YVashington. a two-touchdown underdog, up- set the Bears, 7-0, and came within an ace of knocking the champs out of the playolfs. The game was played in the mud. GALILEO-NOV 9 BEARS CHEW UP LIONS-38-7 It was in this game Mission started its greatest comeback. They defeated Galileo, 38-7, with Gar- land Bluford leading the way. fffmltirizlerl on Page Nj TOP RIGHT CORNER: THE CLINCHER in the Lincoln game came on this olay that shows the Lincoln ball carrier Stan Glass fum- bling after a bang up tackle by Alonzo Williams. Tackle Dave Bruce gobbled up the ball and lumbered 67 yards to a TD to put the Bears ahead by a I3-point margin. UPPER RIGHT: The great rally-when BEAT POLY rang throughout the halls of the Bear Lair-and when the spirit that had never been seen-or will ever probably be equalled-was led lgy 3.8. prexy Sal Vergara and yell leaders Jim McRory and Carol ra y. RIGHT: McRory's Monster in the BEAT POLY rally spilled over into l8th street, blocking traffic, and having a ball. BELOW RIGHT: THE EVIDENCE of what the Bears did to the Mustangs and how the Bearmen won themselves the first football championship for Mission in I8 years.
