CAPTAIN HAROLD D. BARKER COMMANDING OFFICER DECEMBER 1970 - APRIL 1972 Captain Harold D. BARKER was born in Basil, Ohio and raised in the Dayton, Ohio area. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and was com- missioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in March 1951. His early tours included USS MCKEAN (DD-784) and USS FLETCHER (00-445). After graduation from Submarine School in 1953, Captain BARKER served aboard USS BLUEGILL (SSK-242), USS POMFRET (SS-391), and USS QUEENFISH (SS-393). After a tour as Material Officer with Staff, COMSUBGRU, Westpac, he served as head SSBN Test Engineer for the Polaris Project. Following successive tours aboard USS BALAO (AGSS-285) and USS BREAM (SS-243) as Executive Officer and Navigator, he became Commanding Officer of USS SABALO (SS-302) in December 1964. Cap- tain BARKER entered the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island in the fall of 1965. Upon completing his course of studies in June 1967 he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans at U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang, Republic of Vietnam. Prior to assuming command of MISPILLION, Captain BARKER served as an Assistant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C.

COMMANDER ROBERT E. MACLEAN COMMANDING OFFICER APRIL 1972 - PRESENT Commander Robert E. MACLEAN was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and was raised in that area. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Fitchburg State College and was commissioned an Ensign upon completion of Officer Candidate School at Newport, R.I., in the summer of 1955. Commander MACLEAN ' S first tour of duty was aboard the destroyer escort OTTERSTETTER serving as Communication ' s Officer and later as Combat Information Center Officer. In 1957, Commander MACLEAN returned to Officer Candidate School where he served a two year tour as an Operations Instructor. His next assignment was as First Lieutenant and Gunnery Officer on the destroyer tender ARCADIA. From 1961 to 1964 he served as Engineer Of- ficer of the destroyer MYLES C. FOX followed by a tour as Engineer Officer of the missile destroyer SELLERS. In 1964, he was assigned as a Logistics Planning Officer with the Joint Staff of U.S. STRIKE COMMAND. Following a tour as Executive Officer in the destroyer MCCARD, CDR MACLEAN had a short tour as Officer-in-Charge of the Underway Training Unit in Charleston, S.C. and a normal shore tour as Plans Officer for the First Naval District. Prior to assuming command as the Twenty-Seventh Commanding Officer of MISPILLION, on 13 April 1972, CDR MACLEAN served as Executive Officer in the dock landing ship PLYMOUTH ROCK.
