CLASS HISTORY Remember September 1939? Yep, the year we be- gan our endless journey through school. At least most of us started then. Some started in 1938 and one of them was Ted Maragos, who began his school career a year before most of us. But unfortunately this didn't last very long for he was soon sent home for bad behavior. When first grade finally did start, the stu- dents at Washington school were asked to recite some- thing by memory. Up popped Bud Wheeler with a proud smile on his little face and said, I had a little monkey, I took him to the country, and fed him some gingerbread. Along came a binder, and cut off his hinder, and now my poor monkey is dead! The beginning of the second grade at McKinley school brought Joan Swanson, Margie Luedke, and Joanne Lyders together. This three-some formed a club, calling themselves the Busy Bee's. Joan was elected presi- dent, Margie, secretary, and Joanne, treasurer. One un- fortunate day, Joanne and Margie got mad at Joan and for spite spent the club's resources, which amounted to eleven cents. This wasn't the only unfortunate thing which occurred, however. While filing in from recess one day at Lincoln, it was discovered that Maurice Wolla was minus one shoe. With the other shoe in hand, he trailed desolutely from room to room looking for its missing partner. Time went on until finally the sixth grade rolled around. This was a great year for Lincoln's championship basketball team. Remember that un- forgettable game played against Washington? The final score on this particular game was 100 to 3. Of the three points made by Washington school, Bud Wheeler had a grand total of one point. Then came the day we graduated from the sixth grade. How big we felt as we walked up-town to junior high, and the excitement of having locker keys!! Didn't we feel proud? Then, as those things happen, an ac- cident occurred in Mrs. Strand's seventh grade science class. Several kids were asked by Mrs. Strand to clean the salamander bowl. With the faithfulness of any seventh grader, they poured the water from the bowl. How were they to know without being told that they were supposed to take the salamanders out before they poured the water out. But, of course, accidents do happen. About the same time, there was a feud on between Donn Aaby and Sam Eide. Donn was Vice President of home room 105, and Sam was the Presi- dent of the English class. Well, one day the English class played Truth or Consequences. Donn was the victim of Sam and since the question was impossible to answer, Donn had to take the consequences. Two spoonsful of castor oil! Soon after, dllfmg homefoofn hour, Sam became Donn's victim. Revenge was. in Donn's mind and after giving Sam an equally im- possible question, he covered Sam with an oil cloth and sprayed water into Sam's face to his hearts content. Then tragedy struck again. During one of the big parties held at the Student Union in the eighth grade, the Student Union caught on fire. That was the last of the parties ever held there as far as junior high school kids were concerned. Now We were in the ninth grade. The big shots, the wheels of junior high. How big we felt as we looked down on the seventh graders. Not only did we feel big, we acted big. On one occasion Jim Riebe walked out of Mr. McGuren's class because a few kids bet him a dollar that he didn't dare. The ninth grade also had its glamour when Carol Wilhelm and Joanne Lyders ran for queen. How exciting it was with all the campaigning. Joanne became our queen and we had the first full-fledged coronation ceremony ever held in junior high. Again we graduated and what a change there was from being big shots of junior high to green froshies in senior high. Not only were we the green froshies, but we were also the victims of the juniors and seniors on initiation day. This is one day none of us will ever forget. On this day we had lipstick smeared all over us, rotten eggs cracked over our heads and onions tied around our necks. Remember the fits our parents had? Some how we lived through that year and the next year as juniors we reformed the initiation. Then the biggest event in our junior year came upon us-the prom. With Sharon Nolan as prom chairman, and Sleepy Lagoon as our theme, the decorations in our estimation were the best yet. When prom night finally came, Skip Valker, class president, and his partner, Lois Abra- hamson led the grand march. What a night it was! Yes, that was a big event in our lives. Suddenly our final year was upon us and with it came Loyalty Day and our queen Isabelle Bickler. Remember the excitement with which we watched the fellows win our game. The thrill over class rings, announcements, and graduation pictures. When all of that was over, remember gradu- ation? Although we waited twelve years for that day to come, how sad we felt at the thought that we would never be able to have all the fun again. As we part each of us going in our own direction-some to college, some to work, and some to help out Uncle Sam-our memories of Minot High School will always be with ug, uf
