Mankato attempts big city image Mankato is attempting to create a cultural dimension to the city by building an oversized sculp- ture on an undersized lot and opening an art gallery in the basement of an office building. ln l968, Bretts, a large department store and the First National Bank of Mankato, in honor of their centennial anniversaries, donated an 58,000 sculp- ture to the city. The metal piece of construction was, to say the least, a conversation piece. The critism had settled down to a passive murmur when Mankato's Downtown Council draped Christmas lights on the sculpture during the holiday season. In a letter to the editor of the town newspaper, the Free Press, an MSC student made the comment that Mankato sure knows how to appreciate art. The Gallery 500, located in the 500 block of Front St., is affording both Mankato residents and college students with an opportunity to see some of the work of local as well as out of town artists.
