Clubs Invite Creative Thinking Minnehaha's club scene included rhe Marh ream and chess club, who continued rheir crearive problem solving. Minnehaho also enjoyed rhe arrival of rhe new Dr. Who club, T.A.R.D.I.S. ’ The purpose of rhe marh ream is ro recognize achievements in math and ro provide role-models for rhe students ro admire, said Cooch Brian Pererman. The rhirreen-member ream, second largest in rhe conference. included students from oil grades. Ir ranged from those who were simply interested in moth ro those who were truly exceptional. The marh ream grew and improved in its rhird year. This year also marked rhe firsr marh meet held or Minnehaha in two years, resulting in a tie with Sr. Anthony. The seven-member chess club, headed by advisor Guido Kauls and President Kenneth Gisselquisr (12). continued ro improve the standard of chess playing through careful and dedicated practice. With on elaborate constitution and a political heirorchy, rhe newly formed Dr. Who Club, otherwise known as T.A.R.D.I.S. (Timely Arrived Renegade Doctors Indion Society), provided a needed niche for Minnehaha's science fiction fans. The club's ten members discussed rhe latest television show, passed bills, and planned Dr. Who parries Although rhe processes were strange (President Brian Erchieson (10) was elected by a toss of a coin), rhe members were very serious about their devotion to Dr. Who. Changes Enhance Worship A new emphasis wos placed on spiritual life with rhe introduction of Youth Alive, the completion of rhe Board's survey of spiritual life influences, chonges in convocation, and foil Spiritual Life Week speaker Denny Moon. Youth Alive was a student Bible study which met on Mondoys at 7 p.m. and Fridays at 7:30 a.m. Students go together to sing, pray, have devotions, engage in Bible studies and group discussions about issues (n their lives, ond listen to guest speakers. They olso hod social activities such as gening together to eat and go bowling. The survey of the board suggested that students are more influenced by peers than teachers, ond resulted in o closer look at homeroom devotions as a meaningful method of developing students' spiritual life. • There were chonges in convocation such as rhe adding of the chimes, regular use of the choir, benedictions, more handouts and singing. During Spiritual Life Week, October 20-24, Reverend Denny Moon from Granby, Connecticut spoke to students ond faculty on the rheme Life Is Difficult. Rev. Dan Bergstrom felt Rev. Moon hod the gifts and talents for speoking to young people ond identifying with rheir hurts ond needs. One factor that mode Rev. Moon's speeches interesting wos his use of people from the oudience to ossist him. Mr. Gerald Nordstrom expresses his distaste for rhe importance students place on foshion.
