Harold wondered to himself as he started toward the office. I see the seniors still have their traditional lockers, decorated and all, but I don’t see any eighth graders together around theirs.. May I see Dean Greener? Where is his office? Oh, he is principal of the upper school? That must keep him out of trouble. I see most classes are the same, but where is the Spanish room? This looks like the prayer chapel to me. Things have really moved around. Languages and Bible are in former junior high rooms and English classes are together in trhe 300’s. But of 2 course Mr. Erickson and Mr. Swanson still have their same rooms. It must be nice for teachers to have their own rooms. I bet it makes it easier for them to get together with their students to offer help. It seems to me the North Campus is a little quieter and less crowded, since there are only about 650 students, grades 9-12. I wonder how the ninth graders feel about moving into ‘junior high’ lockers and rooms? I even wonder what the junior high is like at South Campus. How do I get there? Ten blocks south? I’m going to see if I can ride along with the chemistry and physics students bussing there. 3 ... I thought the other building was a maze, but I guess this place isn’t too bad. Large, clean rooms, carpeted halls, and big lockers. Even a nice view of old River Road. Wild designs and bright colors that go up and down the halls makes it kind of interesting ... what’s happening? It must be passing period. What other reason would there be for these short energetic people to rush down the halls filling the air with whoops and yells? Hey, not only did Minnehaha extend to another campus, but another grade was added too. So with the new sixth graders and the seventh and eighth grades, there are, you say, 350 kids? That must keep Mrs. Anderson on her toes. She is the principal for the middle school now isn’t she? If anyone can keep things together, she can ... so show me all the sports facilities.. “Talk about together facilities! Look at the field space. There is a running track, a regulation football field, a baseball diamond, use of Sheltering Arms soccer field and five tennis courts, three of them indoor. The wrestling room is three times the size of the old one and there are two gymnasiums, indoor hockey and considerably larger locker rooms.” Well, Minnehaha goes through changes, but it still is the same school I remember it to be with people coming together from far and near. One thing is for sure, it is still Jesus Christ who really keeps it all together!” 5 GETTING TOGETHER LOVE FROM ABOVE AND AROUND I Convocations included testimonies from students as well as faculty. Music played a big part, with Nehemiah and our own students displaying their talents by participating in the Singers, Concert Band, or other choirs or bands. Spiritual Life Week at the North Campus featured Pastor Bud Palmberg, pastor of Mercer Island Covenant Church in Washington. Pastor Palmberg spoke on different aspects of sin. At the South Campus, Pastors Al and Larry Magnuson spoke on such titles as peer pressure, the family, and God’s way of measuring us, which differs from that of the world. Al is senior pastor and Larry is youth pastor at Redeemer Covenant Church. At North Campus, convocations were held on Wednesdays this year, while at the South Campus they were held twice a week. 8 Spiritual Life 1) Rev. Paul Johnson in his office with Rev. Palmberg 2) Senior, Kurt Rosselit reading the scriptures 3) Senior Tom Engstrom speaking during a student convo 4) Singers performing during chapel 5) After a late night of studying, Tom Mundt catches a few winks 6) Pastor Al Magnuson pointing out examples of student behavior and Pastor Larry Magnuson laughing 7) Nehemiah performing 8) Marie Holman sharing memories 9) Treble choir adding to worship Spiritual Life 9 1981 HOMECOMING ROYALTY OH, WHAT A NIGHT! The 1981 Homecoming Royalty spent much time together during the two weeks prior to Homecoming coronation night. Both guys and girls had to find formal wear for Friday night’s coronation, in addition to attending a luncheon with President Nelson at Lees in Highland Village and many meetings with Assistant Principal Paul Norby and Principal Ken Greener. One major task was to purchase the girls’ dresses. They were found quickly at a bridal shop and it ‘just so happened’ that all six dresses were in the exact needed sizes. Evidently a bride had wanted five dresses made in one color and one dress made in another color. The manufacturer made a mistake in the odd color and the bride refused to take them, enabling the girls to get them for half price. Friday night finally came and with it excitement and anticipation. Before the program, the court gathered together in a circle for a quick prayer. Then they were introduced, along with their parents. Following the program, the candidates formed a line along the stage and 1980's Homecoming Queen and King. Lisa Erickson and Mark Aamot. walked on stage in the last minutes of their reign. Lisa ripped open the envelope, took the scepter from Mark, and walked up and down the line. Unable to continue the suspense, she gave the scepter to Dave Erickson, her brother, along with a hug and kiss. Then it was time to reveal 1981's Queen. After opening the second envelope. Mark removed the red velvet robe from Lisa and draped it around Kara Mjorud while she stood mouth-open for a second. The new King and Queen took their place together center stage amid continuing applause and finally were escorted out to receive congratulations. King Dave Erickson Queen Kara Mjorud 10 Homecoming Royally Princess Linda Olson Prince Kent Gillespie Princess Kathy Swenson Prince John Wallinga Princess Marie Holmen Prince Tom Engstrom Homecoming Royalty 11 0NE ENGtMNTEB EVENING Ao ‘enchanted’ evening it was! After many hours of practice, the junior class, led by president Bart Regher and in keeping with tradition. put on the Homecoming program. The story revolved around the love between the prince (Jon Fenton) and the page (Cyndi Morton) and how they found each other. To begin with, the king (Kurt Rosedahl) sent his son (Jon) with a page (Cyndi) to find a wife. They met strange people in strange lands, visiting Hard Rock Land and Fairy Tale Land. After capturing the prince and putting him to sleep, the wicked witch (Jeanne Rikkers) dueled with the page. Good prevailed over evil in the end. with the help of a handy water gun. The page, to the surprise of all. turned out to be a girl and the prince and page were married, of course. All in all the program went as planned with the exception of Jon and Cyndi’s surprise kiss at the end. 12 Homecoming Program 1) “Bo’1 2) The seven dwarfs 3) Tom Whitehead and Dave Shirley with comments for the prince 4) Dancing fairies 5) As the play comes to a close, the prince realizes the page is a girl 6) Page to the rescue 7) What am I supposed to say? 8) The fairy feeds popcorn to the witch 9) Jon Davis and Bob Larson as the Old 2 Lady Who Lived in the Shoe's sons 5 13 1) Fans trying to keep dry on a wet day 2) Steve Morrison running behind the blocking of Brian Parrish 3) Football players keeping warm on the sidelines 4) Julia Albinson going up for a spike 5) Soccer players observing their victory 6) Tim Schmidt drilling a penalty kick 7) Pink Panthers proudly parading 8) Quarterback John Borstad waiting for the snap from center Todd Hansen 9) John Wallinga turning on the speed 10) Linda Nelson setting up for a win over B.C. 8 14 Homecoming Sports OH, WHAT A DAY! All three teams were victors on Homecoming Saturday, which helped make the day a big success. The soccer team got the ball rolling with a 10-0 victory over Brady. Just as successful was the volleyball team, which swept Brooklyn Center 18-11, 18-8. Between games, such things as a dunking machine and a lunch served by the Pink Panthers provided plenty of action. Prior to the football game, a parade took place from North Campus to South Campus. The marching band, cars with Homecoming Royalty and the Pink Panthers were all part of the parade. Concluding the successful day was the football game. Despite a rainy afternoon, Minnehaha defeated Cannon Falls 7-6. This win was the first Homecoming football game victory since 1975, when Minnehaha defeated Brooklyn Center 27-21 in overtime. Homecoming Sports 15 DEDICATION “It is an historic moment in the life of Minnehaha Academy, stated Reverend Stanley Henderson, Northwest Conference Superintendent of the Evangelical Covenant Church of America, owners of Minnehaha’s North Campus and newly dedicated South Campus. Minnehaha’s South Campus was formally dedicated on Sunday. October 3 at 3:00 p.m. President Craig Nelson welcomed the crowd. Scripture reading and greeting were given by Dr. Richard Sletten. Chairman of the Board of Education. He also recognized the other Board members, including the Reverend Thomas Anderson who gave the Invocation. Superintendent Henderson spoke, followed by the dedication by the congregation and Dr. Milton Engebretson, President of the Evangelical Covenant Church. President Engebretson formerly was a minister at Elim Covenant Church. Special music was provided by the sixth grade chorus and a string quartet from the North Campus. School Chaplain Paul Johnson closed the service with the Benediction. 16 Dedication TUDENT GOVERNMENT NORTH CAMPUS STUDENT COUNCIL IVAtAAmib WELCOME SOUTH CAMPUS STUDENT COUNCIL STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT — Jon Skibbe SENIOR CLASS — Pres. The drama department started working on David and Lisa September 22. On November 6 and 7 they performed for many students, teachers, parents, relatives and friends. During several of the rehearsals. Miss Tracey Gilmore encouraged the cast to really open up to the others they were working with. A classic time for this was at the un-party. In the play, David, the son of very wealthy parents, is sent to a school for “crazy children. He meets a young girl (Lisa) who is a schizophrenic and through their relationship at the Berkly school, they help each other out. Although the play centers around friendship, touching” was an important factor in making the theme possible. David is cured of his Don't touch me” attitude, showing friendship and love to Lisa. Many hours were spent in prayer, holding hands, and just uplifting each other. Those who took part in the play will always remember: .. . up in the prayer chapel. All this and more went on the night of November 21, when the junior and senior girls grabbed their favorite guys for Sadie Hawkins. About 65 couples showed up in spite of the ice and snow. Some new events were added to this year's festivities: tricycle races, three legged and gunny sack races. Old favorites such as the licorice kiss were still a big part. Many people helped with the organization and setting up for Sadie. Kenny Larson, Jon Klassen, Bart Regher and Sue Behning (senior and junior class officers) were in charge of it all. English teacher Janet Johnson volunteered her services as “Markin’ Samantha” and Barb Olson, English teacher, tended jail with help of many willing sophomores. Tracey Gilmore and Paul Norby also helped. 24 Sadie Sadie 25 Snow Daze was held this year the week of February 8-12. At the North Campus, Monday was Ragstock Day, Tuesday was Sweatsuit Day. Wednesday was Hawaiian Day, Thursday was Jersey Day and Friday was Red White and Heart Day. At the South Campus it was Western Day, Sweatsuit Day, Hawaiian Day, Army Day and Jersey Day. Activities such as snow cones after school and the broomball tournament were once again part of Snow Daze week. Some broomball teams were “Uncle Eric’s Chicago Sheiks, “King Salami’s Blonde Bombshells, “Bruce's Gooses, and the tournament winners, “Classes Two Hours Late and No Morning Kindergarten, who defeated three teams, including the Rim Jobs 2-0 in the final. The games were played at the South Campus ice arena. Also played that week was an ice hockey game between Middle School faculty and students. Refereeing was provided by two Blue Aardvark members, Ken Gardner and John Parsch. On Saturday night two movies were shown at the North Campus, What’s Up Doc? and a John Wayne movie called Cowboys. 26 Sno-Daze NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Members of the National Honor Society are nominated and carefully evaluated by a faculty committee in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. A grade point average of 3.0 in the past 7 quarters is required. Juniors must average a 3.3 grade point average. Principal Ken Greener advises NHS. An induction for new members was held on April 13, 1982. NHS members are responsible for running the bookstore before school and during lunch hours in the campus room. Profits help pay for a planned activity at the end of the year. Members also support a needy child through the Compassion Program. The goal is to provide sponsor for needy children throughout the world. This child was Tjia Sign Hian, whom they supported prayer and correspondence. Members again sold carnations during Spirit Week. After absence of two years, the club started up again. Leaders Beth Carlson and Loree Caple agreed that the Pink Panthers were more active this year than ever before. The Pink Panthers had a float in the first annual Homecoming parade and also threw a party for the varsity football and soccer players. According to Beth Carlson, “Pink Panthers brings together the junior and senior girls with new friendships and the gratification of God through the support of the athletic teams. PINK PANTHERS Founders and presidents John Burke. Eric Skoglund, David Patz and Ken Gardner were responsible for the birth of M.A.’s first male pep club, the Blue Aardvarks. The Aardvarks were officially founded in November of '81 with thirty-eight charter members. The Aard-varks' cheering section added needed fan support at several M.A. games, matches, and contests. When club members weren't busy cheering, they were attending Aardvark parties. The Aardvark motto was “Blue is cool! Bruce Frindinger was awarded the Honorable Mention medal for individual achievement, finishing the season with a 7-1-1 record, one of the best in the division. The matches were held every Tuesday for ten weeks at St. Paul Central High School and usually lasted one and a half hours. SKI CLUB The ski club this year had plenty of snow to ski on but the temperature and the wind did not cooperate so two of the club’s trips had to be postponed. With windchills around 50 to 60 degrees below zero not even the brave wanted to go skiing and have to ride up the chairlifts. Some of the trips took the skiers to Afton Alps, Welch Village and as far away as Duluth. Many skiers that were involved in ski club this year really thought that it was great. The cross country ski club also had a number of outings this year. Some were to Nine Mile Creek in Bloomington and to the Town and Country Golf Course in St. Paul. Even though the cross country ski club has fewer members than the downhill ski club they made up for that difference in the fun times they had skiing through the woods and over the frozen lakes. Chess Club Ski Club GERMAN-DEUTSCH Once again the German Club kept busy this year. New club members were initiated at the Oktoberfest. Towards Christmas, a very successful St. Nikolas Tag party was held. The movie The Sting was shown and chocolates such as Milka and Toblerone, along with Gummi Bears, were sold at the movie. German Day was on March 11. during Foreign Language Week. The German students went to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater, where they ate dinner and performed skits. The previous day. March 10. included an all-day bake sale plus a convocation put on by the seniors. Dieses war wieder einmal ein gutes Jahr fur Deutsch und den Deutschen Klub. Although It had no official club this year, new Spanish teacher Mrs. Debbie Hillar planned many cultural activities for the students. Wearing costumes on the appointed day during foreign language week was required and food such as churros. long Spanish donuts or tacos were sold during cafe day. A trip to Spain and cooking and food units for all classes were also discussed. A todos los alumnos de habla espaftol — Siempre recordare de los buenos momentos que he pasado este afio. Despite the cold, rainy weather the team held onto a 7-0 lead, until late in the fourth quarter when Cannon Falls came up with a touch-down. Final score: Minnehaha 7, Cannon Falls 6. Another great achievement which took place was a winning season. Minnehaha’s over-all record was 5-4. Defeating Cannon Falls, Rockford, Mahtomedi, Blake, and Marshall-U. The team placed fourth in the Tri-Metro Conference, ending up with a 3-3 record. Craig Aycock, John Borstad and Todd Hanson were selected to the All-Conference team, and Tim Shaffett, Mike Murphy, and captain Greg Wegwerth were given All-Conference Honorable Mention. The team consisted of one freshman, five juniors, four sophomores and senior captain Julia Albinson who provided team leadership. Although most of the team was young and inexperienced they showed they had much potential and optimism. Their first game against conference-dominating Marshall-U. was a turning point for the team. Despite their loss, it gave the team confidence. They were defeated in a close struggle with De LaSalle (45-39) March 5 at Breck school in Golden Valley. Another highlight of the season was when senior Julia Albinson scored 1000 points, which has never been scored by any basketball player in Minnehaha Academy’s history. It was done in the Indians 48-21 win over Brooklyn Center on January 5. The team ended their season with a 10-2 conference record and 14-7 overall. The team was coached by Gary Leafblad. Kelly Coolbroth As in past years, the twenty-four M.A. cheerleaders gave it their all in cheering the Indians to victory. Both Varsity and B-Squad cheerleaders were divided into separate squads: one for football-basketball, the other for soccer-hockey. The Varsity had a chance to do something different this year. During the State Soccer Tournament, all twelve cheered together. It was hard to synchronize twelve people to do the same .jumps and kicks at the same time and to be in perfect rhythm with each other; however the twelve seemed to have it all together and they ended up doing a good job keeping the fans cheering and yelling to root our team to Second in State. Although sometimes it may not look like it, cheerleaders have a tough job. Like the players, they are required to be at every game — rain, sleet, or snow. They’re in charge of making signs and treat bags to pep up the guys before games. They also are in charge of keeping the fans cheering and yelling throughout the whole game. They all work together to get their job done well. Varsity captains were Jean Johnson and Marie Holmen. They and their advisor, Sue Morgan, helped organize the squad's tasks, pep-fests, and schedules. Cheerleaders 66 Fine Arts SIXTH GRADE CHOIR Front row) Mark McCary. Duane Sollic. Jayne Postuma. Director Jon Larson ALL TOGETHER People 79 SENIORS SENIORS SENIORSSENIORS SENIORS SENIORS We made it! After all those years of waiting we were finally seniors. It seemed funny at first... seeing all those familiar faces in senior hall ... sitting front and center” during convos... realizing that when Mr. Greener said seniors on the morning announcements he meant us. Even with all the changes it didn’t take long before we were used to school again ... walking in the door as the bell was ringing... racing down River Road to the new South Campus ... wondering who to ask to Homecoming. It was fun to see people from our class up on stage as royalty, and yet it seemed a little sad to think that the next year we would see the program as alumni. CLASS OF 82 Everything seemed to happen so fast... going to football games, tailgating at the soccer tournament and then it was already time for basketball and hockey at the •■new arena. Somewhere between there we squeezed in Sadie. Powder Puff and a glorious five day vacation (those long awaited snow days!). The days just seemed to go by faster... all of a sudden we were filling out college applications, being measured for caps and gowns, planning sno-daze. writing term papers, thinking about J.S., the senior trip, graduation and saying goodbye... Somehow we've made it. We’ve had a lot of fun and made a lot of friends along the way... Together we survived the homework that always seemed to be turned in late and the classes that never seemed to end... we learned to appreciate each other and ourselves. What a super year — a great way to end out time at Minnehaha. Seniors 81 Singers. Pink Panthers. German Club Sound of Music. David and Lisa. Trip to Germany '80 Victoria Andersen Soccer. Cheering at the soccer tournament also brought us together as a class. As the year progressed the activities the sophomores were involved in strengthened, bonded and kept us close to each other. We have to work toward a class togetherness, class spirit. We have learned a lot about making friends and reaching out to others over this year. This is reflected in how we treat each other in the classrooms, such as Bible and Freshman English which we all have to take. It is also clearly reflected in our sports, such as JV Football, soccer and volleyball.
