We hope that these pages will keep alive the memory of friendship, places, and hours that have made this year to be a happy one at Minnehaha Academy. It is our hope that this book will not only be a record of these happy memories, but also that Christ, who shone through these many activities will also shine through our lives. ■i L $JU PAGE 5 PAGE 69 J Mighty fortress Js Our Qod A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon: Our help is He in all our need, Our stay, what-e’er doth happen. For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe: Strong mail of craft and power he weareth in this hour; On earth is not his equal. Stood we alone in all our might. Our striving would be losing; For us the one true man doth fight, The man of God’s own choosing. Who is this chosen One? Tis Jesus Christ, the Son, The Lord of hosts, tis He who wins the victory In every field of battle. Still they must leave God’s word its might, For which no thanks they merit; Still He is with us in the fight, With His good gifts and Spirit. And should they, in the strife, Take kindred, goods and life, We freely let them go, They profit not the foe; With us remains the kingdom. 'Dedicated Zo MRS. ZELLA MAE SANDIN We, the 1957 ANTLER staff, do gratefully dedicate this year’s ANTLER to you. We have appreciated the many hours of work you have given to our class. You have been willing to give your spare time in helping us with the Senior Class Play. Also, you have been the instructor in several of our senior classes. Most important, you have led us through the light of your Christian testimony to a closer walk with our Lord. May God bless you always, Mrs. Zella Sandin. 8 of the year Et)ITOR: m N moberg II Student Council The purpose of the student council is to give students an opportunity to voice their opinion and to give the faculty a better understanding of our wants and needs. This is not all. They also plan the school parties and many other behind the scenes things. They are the government which is so vital to the well being of our school. We want to thank the student council for planning the HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR. Row 1j N. NYQUIST. T. MILLIGAN. S. GORKE, C. CARLSON, M. PALMQUIST, W. SANDO. M. LARSON, D. BEVIS. Row 2: J. JONES, B. Most of you probably met me a few months ago. I would like to tell you aoout myself so that you will remember me a bit more vividly. The day in which I made my debute was filled with a festive air. As vou approached the chapel you were greeted with a beautifully decorated platform. 1955’s returning Queen Sherrill Anderson led the procession. Then one by one, Sue Rhodes, Bettv Ferden, and Janet Falk, the attendants, entered in navy blue brocade dresses. Following them came the candidates in their shimmering, ice blue, brocade gowns slowly making their way to the platform. Excitment mounted and at last we had our long awaited queen, Queen Hope Dahlen. She made a beautiful queen. A wonderful program immediately followed with many amusing moments. As a prologue to our game we had our annual banquet and bonfire. Our parade was led by the Queen and her attendants to Hamline Field where we met Concordia on the football field. We had a victory over them with a score of 33-0. I do hope that through this brief visit you will have pleasant memories of our acquaintance, for I tried to make this M.A.’s best Homecoming yet!! 23 QUEEN HOPE 'Let's hove a touchdown, boys' A hush fell over the auditorium as strains of music announced the entrance of the candidates for the 1957 Sno-Daze King and Queen. The girls were dressed in green velveteen dresses and carried white fur muffs which were trimmed with white shattered carnations. The fellows wore midnight-blue tuxedos. They were attended by Judy I .arson and Danny Dillon each carrying a red velvet pillow on which rested the envelopes that contained the secrets everyone was waiting to hear. Suspense mounted as Joni Lee and Jon Fredlund were crowned the 1957 Sno-Daze king and queen. Attending them were Chinny Lundberg, Mary Palmquist, Stan Bakke, and Dick Bevis. Following a very hilarious Gay 20’s program, our pucksters lost a well-played hockey game, 3-2 to Shattuck, our opponents for the day. Shattuck topped our wrestling team in the afternoon, also. After a very delicious ham dinner, our basketball team went to victory, heating Shattuck 53-33. Sno-Daze, 1957 will be an unforgettable day to all of us. 26 27 QUEEN JONI KING JON GINNY MARY STAN TV e reigning Sno Doxe royalty tv Row 1: G. HANSEMANN, S. JOHNSON, P. MUNTER, P. MURDOCK, M. The Quiver has been printed com-merically and this means deadlines, deadlines, deadlines. You can imagine every fifth hour in the Quiver room. Everyone scurring here and there trying to complete articles with which to meet their deadline. The Quiver comes out every three weeks under the guidance of Mrs. Rykken and Miss Franklin. There has been a wide variety in programs. During Missionary Week this fall we had different missionaries to tell us of their many experiences. We have also had guest speakers from the twin cities and surrounding areas. Some of the most inspiring times were when we had President Anderson and the student speakers. This year we also have had a series on a Christian and His Vocation. They have been from such fields as doctors, businessmen, lawyers, and other fields. They have told how Christ has helped them in their life’s work, and this has been a challenge to many of us. We want to thank those who have painstakingly planned these programs to make them enjoyable and an inspiration to us. 48 PRESIDENT A. ANDERSON BYRON CARROLL REV. P. ECKSTROM. football The desire to play good football was the reason for the success of this year’s team. Although the team was not blessed with speed or weight they proved that Minnehaha athletes come through when the going gets tough. This year the Minnesota Independent School League conference was stronger than any other year in the history of the conference. Still, in spite of the handicaps, the Indians played good ball and ended up in second place in conference play. In the first three games, the Indians amassed a total of 115 points while holding the opposition scoreless. The most thrilling game of the season was played against S.P.A. It took a last minute touchdown pass to win the game for the Indians. After a five game winning streak, the defeat by Blake was probably the biggest disappointment of the year for the Minnehaha team. Snapping back in good form and high spirits the Indians crushed the opposing Shattuck eleven, a traditionally tough team. Homecoming came the week after they beat Shattuck, but the Indians had a tougher time in this game as they had to come from behind to down a stubborn Breck team 7-6. Possibly the finest game of the year for the Indians was the DeLaSalle game in which they lost by only one point. This was a team outside the M.I.S.L. and extremely tough one at that. This game was supposed to be a rout for DeLaSalle, but Minnehaha went out and showed the people who attended that the Indians were no pushover. Coach Dillon expressed the hope that we would be able to drop some of the weaker teams on our schedule and meet stronger teams such as DeLaSalle. One of the notable members of the team, was junior halfback Kurt Langsten, who amassed a total of 432 yards in individual rushing. Running close seconds were seniors Malmsten and Casey with 232 and 221 yards respectively. The pass snatching ability of co-captain Shogren and the powerhouse tackling of Ken Manske placed them on the All Conference selections. Although this year’s team was dominated by seniors, there were a number of outstanding juniors, who, when they form the nucleus of an efficient team next year, will give Minnehaha an excellent bid for the championship. 52 football Action 53 54 8. With an amazing 20-2 record the Indians went into the tourmament the favored team. Edging out Blake in the semi-finals by a score of 65-55, the Indians met disaster in the finals. In the second period we fell behind 8 points because of the loss of Anderson. Even though he later returned to the game, we failed to regain the lead. The hot-shooting Concordia team blazed past us in the final minutes to win 60-52. The Indians experienced their coldest shooting night of the season, hitting home on only a third of their shots from the field. This was really a heart-breaking loss because we had played some of the best teams in the Twin Cities and won each time. Named to the All-Tournament team were Ted Malm-sten and Fred Malvorson. Bruce Anderson, junior sharpshooter, led the team in scoring, averaging some fifteen points per game. With a number of junior bucket aces returning to the team next year, it may well be the year Minnehaha will regain the championship. COACH CHARLES SULACK 56 H. EllERS D. KLEVEN COCAPTAIN T. In spite of this, the team did not !x gin to play good hockey until the M.I.S.L. Tournament. In the tournament, the Indians reversed an ear- lier defeat by Shattuck, and won 4-2. They went on to beat Saint Agnes in the semi-finals and were, in turn, beaten by Cretin in the finals. The Indians really surprised everyone by taking second place in the conference in spite of their earlier record. PRESIDENT ARTHUR ANDERSON Dear Seniors: As you stand at this point you are increasingly conscious of the seriousness of being put out on your own. More ancf more you will be assuming full responsibility, and experiencing the full effect of decisions you make, and actions you take. You will discover in your new role a growing sense of responsibility for the society in which you live. What is society but a group of people like yourself! Your home, your church and your school have combined to prepare you for this hour. Now we salute you and send you off with our best wishes. You are on your own now. Yet you are not alone unless you choose to be. Christ wants to go with you all the way, and lead you into the great adventure of serving him! Sincerely yours, Arthur W. Anderson President 70 PRINCIPAL The integrity and wisdom with which our principal Mr. Bengtson has handled the affairs of the student body is very commendable. We started our high school record by electing Ann Williams to guide us through the first part of the year. The days went by swiftly, and soon our first Homecoming was upon us. Under the reign of Peggy Berglund, our activities ended with the winning of the football game against Augustana. The end of the semester was coming fast, but first came Sno-Day and all its activities. Emmy Lou Sudor was crowned queen, and Warren Otteson was crowned king. The exciting basketball game with Blake made a happy ending. Gordon Williams was elected our second semester class president. Christian Emphasis Week brought us an inspiring speaker Rev. Glenn Lindcll. We also had the privilege of hearing E. Stanley Jones, a noted Evangelist. As sophomores we looked forward to a new year and elected Jon Fredlund as leader. One week was spent in the stressing of foreign missions. The senior homeroom presented a mission-ary pageant as their part in the program. Homecoming was soon upon us, and Barbara Langsten was crowned queen. We lost a heartbreaking game to Concordia. A rest was needed by all, and before we knew it Christmas vacation was here. Night Before Christmas” was presented by the Singers, an event which will always be remembered. Then came Sno-Day. The crowns were placed on Denise Carlson and Roger Anderson. Their rule proved to be successful as we were victors over Concordia. We also went on to win the conference titles that year. Woody Carlson as president headed our class for the second semester. Rev. Russell Cervin was our speaker for Christian Emphasis Week, a week of deeper dedication and committment of our lives. At last we were upper classmen. And we chose Stan Bakke to lead us through our first semester. We won a thrilling game over Concordia 33-0. Sherrill Anderson reigned as queen. Remember the J. S. Hill-billy Convention? There were a lot of tramps around that night. The end of the semester came fast, and along with it came Sno-Day. Gordon Smith and Nancy Prescher were crowned king and queen. The planning of our Junior-Senior Banquet made our second semester an important one, so we elected Woody Carlson as president. The theme of our banquet was April in Paris, and the colors were aqua and gold. Hardworking committees made it one of the best J.S. Banquets ever. Many of the students envied the members of the Singers as they loaded the buses to sing in Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa. Christian Emphasis Week brought Dr. Bob Smith to our campus. Under his ministry each student felt a strong moving of the Holy Spirit. Graduation was soon upon us, and we eagerly looked forward to becoming seniors. Stan Bakke was chosen to guide us through the first part of our last year. Homecoming time arrived and along with it the excitement of choosing a queen. After a few tense moments we finally saw the crown placed upon the head of Hope Dahlen. Ann (Podie) Blathcrwick, and Kay Youngberg reigned as attendants. Remember the mixer? After that night every one knew the secret desires of their fellow students. There really was a variety of desires. “The Messiah” was presented by the Singers, choir, and chorus at Christmas. A candle-lighted procession proved to be very beautiful. Christmas vacation was a well deserved one by all. The expectation of Sno-Day brought us to the second semester of our last year. Woody Carlson was once more elected our class president. Joni Lee found a red rose among her lxiuquet and Jon Fredlund found his boutonniere had a white stem making them queen and king of our Senior Sno-Day. Mary Palmquist, Virginia Lund-berg, Stan Bakke and Dick Bevis were the honored attendants. Dr. Hinerman brought the seniors’ last Christian Emphasis Week at M. A. and many students found comfort and new purpose in life through his messages. The Seniors enjoyed all the advantages that went with the senior year. (The Junior-planned J. S.)
