MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA WE SERVE OUR LORD WE WORK AND PLAY TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION 10 ATHLETICS 76 'Ex' SENIORS 20 STUDENT LIFE 94 CLASSES 42 ADVERTISING 100 ACTIVITIES 50 INDEX 132 THE LORD is my shepherd; 1 shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23 In appreciation for all that you have done for our school and for us, we, the Senior Class of 1956, dedicate this yearbook. You have been a faithful friend and an inspiring advisor. You have been willing to spare time from your busy schedule to give help to those who needed it. As an instructor in our shop, you have taught many boys how to do worthwhile things. But most important, your Christian testimony has shown many the way pointing to Christ. May God continue to help and guide you always, Mr. Charles Sulack. 9 ADMINISTRATION Editor: Sonya Adkins ROW It C. Johnson, A. Anderson, D. Nelson, N. Engman, E. laVahn, A. Unnee. ROW 2: L. BOARD OF EDUCATION The men who serve on the Board of Education of Minnehaha Academy have had much experience in dealing with different problems, as they represent many different fields of work. They can therefore bring understanding and a lot of wisdom to the monthly meetings of the Board, which does so much to make the Academy a living institution. 12 PRESIDENT ANDERSON Congratulations, graduate! You should now have the basic equipment for life's living. Home has surrounded you with material provisions, character training, Christian influence, and basic social attitudes. Your years at Minnehaha should have introduced you to a wide scope of knowledge about the world, habits of reasoning, problem-solving, the challenge of a world's need, and to the claims of Christ on your lives. But there is one necessary piece of equipment no one can give you. Your home can't. Your school can't. Not even your church. That is faith. Outside of this your living is doomed to authentic failure, no matter how well it succeeds. So read the words of the writer of the Letter to Hebrews: And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw men to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Faith is beyond a mood; it is resting our being on the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let Him take charge! ARTHUR W. ANDERSON President PRINCIPAL The needs and concerns of every individual student in the matters of curriculum and extracurricular activities, has been handled very well by Mr. Bengtson, our Principal. Endless details involved with administration, and problems of the student body have been loaded upon his shoulders. The busy schedule of a normal schoolday has shown everyone how capable he is in running the affairs of our school. MR. LAWRENCE H. BENGTSON ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Miss Fellroth has been a devoted Assistant Principal for many years. She has been our counselor and constant friend; a help in time of need, and a source of fine Christian inspiration. Miss Fellroth's love and devotion to each student at Minnehaha has made her a very vital part of a student's school life. Her love for Christ has shown in everything she has done. MISS ANNA L. Every experience they had had in school will affect their lives in some way. The test they will now have to face is whether or not they can make use of the knowledge they have gathered. Many memories of high school will still linger on years from now; having good times at football games, cheering the teams on to championships, thrilling to the suspense of Homecoming and Sno-Day, the excitement of class plays, and last, but not least, going to classes. In their final and fullest year, the seniors had 8 very capable officers to lead them, and help plan and direct many activities. 24 TIM AOAM All tho world it made for mo. We began with ninety-seven braves and maidens in our tribe and we chose Jim Larson to be our chief. Our first Indian celebration was a successful one. It was a Freshman-Sophomore mixer held in the dining hall. Soon Homecoming time arrived and Viv Mattson reigned over the occasion. The victory over North Park at the Parade Stadium made the event complete. It wasn't many moons before Christmas vacation was behind us. Then we found ourselves in the midst of plans for Sno-Day. We will remember Gracie Prechtal and Howie Rekstad as our king and queen. Bonnie Agard led us through our semester as president. We were proud of our hockey and basketball teams, for they won the championship and tournament titles. Rev. Eldon Palmquist led our Christian Emphasis Week, and the Holy Spirit moved in our midst. As we gathered around the camp fire for our second year, we knew that with Dave Voss as our chief, we would be brought successfully through the first semester. A weiner roast at Riverside Park was the first celebration of the year. Soon we entered into the Homecoming festivities, and Peggy Berglund reigned as our queen. Our tribe was made happier when our team defeated Augustana, to top off the festival. We had the outstanding privilege of having Dr. E. Stanley Jones, the world famous evangelist, speak to us. We were confident that with Donna Johan-son as our leader, our second semester would be as successful as our first. Again we had championship basketball and hockey teams. Rev. Glenn Lindell was our Christian Emphasis Week Speaker. He led our tribe to higher mountains and many lives were changed. It didn't seem possible, but soon those bewildered squaws and braves of two years before returned as upperclassmen. We elected Gordy Smith as our chief that semester. We can never forget the fun we had at the Junior-Senior Panic Party. Homecoming was soon upon us again and our queen was Barb Langsten. We hadn't seen the sun rise many times before Sno-Day and all of its excitement drew near. Everyone was happy that Rog Anderson and Denny Carlson were our king and queen. We knew that the next semester was an important one as we chose Dave Voss as our leader. Rev. Russell Cervin spoke to us during Christian Emphasis Week. We knew that we had been brought closer to the Lord. Of course, the peak of our Junior year was the planning of the Junior-Senior Banquet. We chose A Southern Garden as the theme, and it was held at the Radisson Hotel. It was a thrill to see the juniors and seniors in their formal dress. We were sad to see the seniors graduate, but we couldn't help feeling honored, for we knew that soon we would be filling their shoes. It was the last Indian Council meeting we would have, and we carefully chose as our chief Al Svanoe. The Hillbilly Convention in Dog-patch was something a little different and we enjoyed it a lot. It was hard to believe that it was now our classmates who were candidates for Homecoming. The royalty was complete with Sherrill Anderson as queen and Sue Bouchard and Sharon Swanson as her attendants. The team kept the spirit and went on to win over Concordia at Hamline Field. The annual roller-skating party was an event that our tribe looked forward to each year. We were proud of our Sno-Day king and queen candidates: Gordie Smith, Don Larson, Carter Peterson, Nancy Presher, Nancy Samuel-son, and Priscilla Martinson. As Gordie and Nancy Presher were crowned, applause broke loose. The banquet, and the two victorious games made Sno-Day complete. Skip Day was one of the last tribal meetings of the Indians, of the class of 1956. What fun we hadl The Junior-Senior banquet was a grand finale to the social gatherings of our tribe. Class Night, Senior Girl's Tea, Cap and Gown Day, and Baccalaureate will long be remembered by each graduating member of our class. But longer yet. Graduation will linger on in our minds. Who could forget the glorious strains of Pomp and Circumstance , as the Seniors marched down the aisle lined by proud parents? We left Minnehaha Academy, our tribal meeting place, with a bit of nostalgia, but we knew it had prepared us well for our future lives in this wide world. 36 1956 CLASS WILL I, Tim Adam, sadly relinquish my undying love for all girls to Dick Bevis. Oick Jacobson Secretary Camilio Jones Treasurer Sharon Johnson ACTIVITIES Editor: Connie Burgess «’ SUE 52 HOME COMING 1955 SHARON 53 QUEEN SHERRILL BARB GLORIA GRACE HOMECOMING Whot was it in the air on the day of Homecoming? Everyone knew it was something exciting! The main cause of excitement was — who would be our 1955 Homecoming queen? As the lovely attendants started walking down the aisles in their shimmering pink dresses, everyone was really excited. These three girls were the runner-ups for the title of queen. Then slowly, the three girls in blue dresses walked down the aisle lined by our uniformed football players. Sue, Sharon, and Sherrill quietly, (and excitedly!) took their places by the chairs on the stage. Gordie Smith and 'Bozo' Thompson soon placed the crown on Sherrill's head, and the royal robe on her shoulders. Applause broke loose! The queen looked really lovely. The royal banquet was served in our own, newly decorated dining hall. When this was over. Queen Sherrill lighted our bonfire. Then off to the Hamline football field; about a hundred cars in a parade, and a police escort to lead us. To top off a great homecoming, our Indians defeated Concordia by a grand total of 33 to 0! Surely, this day will never be forgotten! 54 SNO DAY Everything was perfect for Sno-Day; plans were complete, and the weather was perfect for 'Our Day'. All of us put on our warmest sport outfits and snow boots. This was a day anticipated by all — Sno-Day, 19561 Questions were going around in everyone's mind. Who would be the king and queen? What would the color of the candidates dresses be? Would we win our basketball and hockey games? These questions were the ones we wanted to know the answers to. They were soon to be answered. The candidates walked slowly into the gymnasium. The boys were handsome in their charcoal gray suits, and the girls were simply dreamy in their ice green dresses. Suspense mounted! Would it be Donny, Carter, or Gordy? Nancy, Priscilla, or Nancy? Finally the suspense ended when Nancy Presher and Gordy Smith were crowned as our royal couple, to reign over the rest of Sno-Day. We all rejoiced as our hockey team was victorious over Concordia. A period of skating for all followed the game. When the time came for our royal feast, everyone was really hungry! A program was next, and the two short plays were hilarious indeed. The evening was complete as the Indians defeated Concordia in our basketball game. So ended another Sno-Day! CHORUS 63 CHAPEL SPEAKERS CHAPEL Our programs for this year have been varied, yet they have showed us how to adapt ourselves to our everyday lives in a Christian way. We have had many guest speakers, all of which have proved to be very inspirational. Of course, the programs in chapel would not have been complete without our own faculty pastors speaking in our pulpit. One of the highlights of this year was President Anderson's messages on the Ten Commandments. Christian Emphasis Week was truly felt deeply in the hearts of all, and it was one that a person won't forget easily. Dr. Bob Smith of Bethel College was our guest speaker. Rev. Magnuson, Rev. Olson, Rev. Vetvick, and Rev. Johnson, have brought Christ's Word to us in our Chapel. Homerooms have done their share to make each program they have presented a truly great one. Each and every one of our daily Chapel programs have been so carefully planned, that Christ might shine in all of them. GOSPEL TEAM ROW 1: R. Smith, D. Tornell, V. Schrupp, H. Huber. ROW 2: J. Ruud. The greatest change from last year was the addition of our new and woll-liked coach, Mr. Dave Dillon. Mr. Dillon had playod sevoral very successful years of colloge football at Augsburg, and camo to Minnehaha from Buffalo, Minnesota, where he had been coaching a championship high school team. Another welcome addition to tho team ♦his year was Butch Nielsen, an all-conference player from the lake conference. Butch started regularly at tho quarter-back position, which ho filled very effectively. Co-captains of the team were Gordy Smith and Bozo Thompson. Gordy had lettered three timos before in football, and this year he came through, especially in the Concordia game, to provo himself one of the greatest backs Minnehaha has yet seen. Bozo was the workhorse of tho team with his clean, hard line play. Even though tho team lacked experience and maturity, hopes were high os we opened the season against Olivia on our home field. The game proved to be a runaway for the Indians, who easily won 31-0. Much of our backfield talent wos revealed as touchdowns were made by Ken Manske, Kurt Langstcn, Owen Krueger, and Gordy Smith. Many students will remember the following wookend when the team visited Amery, Wisconsin. Amery proved to be a little too much for Minnehaha to hondle, but they camo back a much wisor team. On September 23 the Indians received a stunning blow as they were beaten 32-7 by Breck. Breck held control of the ball for almost the entire gome; the lone Minnehaha touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a long pass to Gordy Smith. Except for the fact that Breck loter went on to take the league chompionship, there was little consolation for this loss. The Indians improved somewhat the following wook when they lost to Blake by the score of 18-12. Despite the fact they wore beaten, their defense had improved a greot deal, and it looked as though they would begin to roll in the coming weeks. Even though they had improved greatly in the several proceeding weeks, the Indians couldn't quite match the ferocity of a very fine Mounds View team on October 7. They gave it everything they had but wero finally beaton 24-6. This game, also, had a very good conditioning effect on the team, and thoy wero now ready to begin winning. The first conference win came the following wcok when the Indians came through with a clean, hard-fought victory over S.P.A. Tom Casey, Gordy Smith, and Ted Malsten made touchdowns in each of tho first three quarters; S.P.A. made two in the fourth. Thoy almost made a third, but the Indians were ablo to hold, and as the game ended, the score was Minnehaha 19, S.P.A. 14. The high point of the season came on the eve of Homocoming when Concordia was crushed by the inspired Indians with the score 33-0. The first half wos well-fought, but the second half turned into a rout. After accumulating thirteen points in the second and third quarters, tho boys, spurred on by events of the past few days, scored twenty points in the last quarter. Gordy Smith set an all-time record in ground-gaining, covering a total of 212 yards. The Indians then took to the road for their lost gamo which was played at Shottuck. It was not the best season we have over had, but probably the most promising in terms of future success. Over half the team will be back next year, and with the fine coaching of Mr. Dillon and the hard-won experience of this year, they should be able to put in a strong bid for tho championship. 78 JB s ?-r- E V“. .pfCr. BASKETBALL This was a year of destiny for our basketball team. It was apparent to anyone that wo could not go on winning forever. This just happened to bo the year that we lost. After the first part of the season almost evoryono was suro that this was to bo ono of tho strongest teams in our history; in fact, thoro wero several consecutive games when the team scored over sovonty points. But it seems that wo just didn't havo quite enough spark at the very end to come through. Even though we did miss tho championship, it would be far from my purposo to tako away any of tho credit which tho boys really dosorve. At the end of the seoson they had a record of nineteen wins and five losses, an improssive record for any team. Captain Tim Adam was the main stay, with an overage of 15.8 points a game. Fred Halvorson, a sophomore, was next with 19.9. Orin Schueler, Dick Johnson, Don Larson, and Dave Voss comploto the list of starters. We very likely would havo been champs, but, as coach Sulack pointed out, when a school establishes a record such as ours, it becomes hardor to maintain it. Everyone was gunning for us this year. Tho game with Shattuck, in which wo lost the championship, will probably bo rememberod always by those who attended. Along with tho team, tho Shads brought tho loudost cheering section ever assembled in a high school stadium. It served its purpose. Our defeat at tho hands of Concordia was a heart-breaker also. Tho lead changed hands throe times in tho lost two minutes, and it just happened that Concordia was ahead 51-50 whon tho final buzzer sounded. So again, as in football, wo leave it to next year's team to return and bring back the coveted championship which the students at Minnohaha have so much enjoyed having the past few years. HOCKEY Our hockey squad was faced, this year, with tho problem of perfecting an entirely new team. Bob Shogren, brothor of captain Dove Shogren, wos the new coach. Bob had been captain of the 1953 hockey team. The only two returning skaters from either first or second lino last year wore Gordy Smith and Davo Shogron. The team was not without promise, however. Butch Nielson, who had played for Edina-Morningside last year in the Minnesota state hockoy tournamont, become the most versatile man on tho squad. Ho played with equal skill in both wing and defense positions. Tom Cosey, who last year had played with Minneapolis Washburn, added much to the team. In one defense position was Kerm Kvamme, who developed into a very good defenseman. In tho goal were Dick Baxter and Jim Larson. Dick had played some with last year's team; this was Jim's first year. The team opened the season with a 3-0 win over Mohtomedi. The following week they did not fare so well, losing to S.P.A. 3-1. On January 10 they lost to Breck by the same score. Three days later on the 13th they did much better, defeating Concordia 4-3. Gordy Smith pulled the hat trick in this game. The skating Indians wound up the season on February 16, losing to St. Thomas in the first round of the M.I.S.L. tournoment. Although they completely outskotod St. Thomas, they were nipped in overtime 2-1. Our lone goal was scored by Butch Nielson who represented Minnehaha on the all-tournament team. Tho team won fivo games and lost seven — a good rocord in view of its handicaps. 86 Coach Bob Shogren K. Kvamme J. Larson G. Smith Captain D. Shogren ROW 1: J. Larson, B. Nielsen, G. Smith, L. LETTERMENS Something new and entirely different from anything we have ever had before was added to our sports department this year. On November 16 our lettermans club held it first meeting. This type of club hod been organized in many other high schools, and several of our boys thought it a good idea for Minnehaha to have one also. All of our athletes accepted the club with enthusiasm. Lawrence Thompson wos elected president, Dan Conrad was vice-president, and Dave Nelson took care of the finances. One of the first things decided upon was to purchase jackets, which were alike. They were red wool with tan leather sleeves. Another outstanding undertaking of the club was to raise money to pay for movies of our homecoming and sno-day celebrations. The report would not be complete without mention of 'Wrinkles', the official mascot of the group. He was probably the ugliest yet friendliest dog ever to come to Minnehaha. He was seen in his wrinkled nose and plaid jacket at many of our athletic events this year. 88 BASEBALL ROW It O. Schueler, D. Larson, D. Shogren, P. Schiotz, M. Thompson. The one deathless hope for history and eternity is that Ageless Man, who ages ago, hung on the cross for our redemption. If Jesus Christ isn't the hope, there is no answer; if He is our hope. He is all the answer we need! In the challenging quest of bringing this hope to a frightened world, you are on a High Assignment that pray God you will not fail. Congratulations and Godspeed! Gratefully yours, Arthur W. Anderson Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is anything too hard for me? A sincere token of appreciation is in store for each of them. Mr. Hedlund, of Lakeland Color Press, has been very willing to help us with the problems and details which always confront a staff, working on a production such as this. For all of his work, we wish to thank him heartily. A word of special thanks also goes to the capable men who have done the actual printing of this yearbook. A big thanks goes to the Smith Cover Company for having produced for the ANTLER such a beautiful and appropriate cover. A tribute of appreciation goes to the Covenant Press of Chicago for obtaining Sallman's picture of Christ for us. We wish to thank Mr. Lundgren of Lundgren Studios for the beautiful work he has done on the Senior portraits, as well as on the class and other various pictures. Lundgren Studios also took the very fine Homecoming and Sno-Day portraits. Our thanks to Ronnie Opel and John Foreman for taking so many pictures for the ANTLER. Ronnie had now finished his third year of doing a fine job on pictures for our yearbook. John has taken some of the pictures for the advertising section. We sincerely thank Mr. Richard Cooper and Mr. Christian Swenson, our able advisors, for doing much unnoticed, behind-the-scenes work, which has greatly helped our student body staff produce this yearbook. The editors of the different sections have spent many hours planning, typing, and drawing layout sheets to help complete this book. We wish to thank them for their untiring efforts in making this book what it is. A special thanks to Judy Bixby for her fine art work, and the complete job she has done on her section as Advertising Manager. Elaine Nygard has worked diligently on the 'books', as she is the Business Manager. A thank you goes to the Junior staff for doing a good job in getting the necessary ads, and for doing other jobs which will help them next year in producing the 1957 ANTLER. The best of luck to the new Editors and their staff for next year's yearbook! We, the staff of the 1956 ANTLER, hope that you will enjoy looking over this yearbook; we hope that it will bring back wonderful memories of school life at Minnehaha Academy; and we hope that when you see a picture of a friend, it will bring back the thought, Friendship is Golden . 135 Jp= 136
